Thread: Which albums should Steven Wilson remix next?

Which albums should Steven Wilson remix next?

With the news that a remix of "Chicago II" by Steven Wilson is come out soon, I wondered which albums I'd like to hear get his touch (preferably in Blu-Ray audio with all the "Extras" that he gave to his work with Yes, KC & GG and in 5.1 of course).

    U.K. - "U.K.", "Danger Money"
Bill Bruford - "Feels Good To Me", "One Of A Kind", "Gradually Going Tornado"
Gentle Giant - "Free Hand", "In A Glass House"
    Rush - "Clockwork Angels"
Jimi Hendrix - "Are You Experienced?", "Axis: Bold As Love", "Electric Ladyland", "First Rays Of The New Rising Sun"
Weather Report - "Mysterious Traveler", "Tale Spinning", "Black Market", "Heavy Weather", "Mr. Gone"
Yes - "Going For The One"

    Soft Machine - "Third"
Hatfield and the North - s/t

(I believe masters for both are missing, and after I suggested both to Wilson himself during an interview, he said he thought the shit sound of "Third" was part of its charm & that there probably wasn't commercial potential in a Hatfield remix - so there.)

Third is about the only thing I'd be interested to hear a different take on as well. Possibly Going For The One, which is also a lousy mix IMHO.

Not interested in remixes per se but the two UK albums have been unavailable as stand-alone releases for a long time. If nothing else, such a project would get the albums back out again.

Van der Graaf Generator ! I'd love to hear their albums in surround.

    Michael Jackson - Thriller
    Madonna - Like A Virgin
Cannibal Corpse - Butchered At Birth

I'm not buying any music until he has put his magic touch upon it.

A great suggestion. Too bad its "obscurity" unfairly lowers its status. Its easily as good or better than anything he has already remixed imo.

His answer actually started me wondering if some millionaire or, more realistically, some crowdfunding campaign, could raise the necessary money to make that possible, regardless of the commercial potential... If I knew for sure that the multitracks still existed, which I believe is the less likely possibility, I might give this more thought but, things being what they are...

It's better than *anything*, period. Even "The Rotters' Club".

I'm gonna have to fight you at the OK Carrol on this one

'Rotters' is the BEST album ever made, well, along with 'Sing to God'.

Yes - Going For The One
Yes - The Ladder (for 5.1 only - original mix is very good)
    Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning
Todd Rundgren's Utopia (IF Todd would allow it)
Kansas - Leftoverture (for 5.1 only)
The Beatles - Abbey Road (5.1 only)
    IQ - Dark Matter (5.1)
    The Who - Who's Next (5.1)
    Kino - Picture (5.1)
It Bites - The Tall Ships (5.1)

Already ducking the flames from the anti-surround crowd.

I wholeheartedly agree. As much as I love their second album (and I LOVE it), IMHO nothing is able to surpass the magic and the organic feel of their first effort.

That said, I would happily take part in a crowdfunding campaign for the remixing of any of these albums.

Aymeric, after reading your excellent book on the Canterbury Scene I was actually thinking about whether the original tapes of these two albums were still available somewhere. Apparently (and sadly) they’re most likely not.

Going For The One and Tormato really need the Wilson treatment - unlike the five Yes albums he's done so far which were already perfect...

^GFTO absolutely. With Tormato I don't know if it's even the production/mix so much as the instrument tones they were all using on that one. Howe, Squire and Wakeman all use these really gimmicky, annoying sounds. I think there's a limit with this one as to what can be done. And it doesn't have 'classic' status.

One of the best albums of the 70s but oh boy, I wouldn't envy anyone trying to make that one (or indeed a lot of Rundgren's other stuff) sound good! But a good suggestion...one wonders whether the mixing choices were down to him cramming the vinyl so much.

Indeed, has any of their stuff ever been remastered in the first place?

This is a great list----GFTO is a great album and he might as well finish up the great Yes records at this point---also like the idea of the Bruford records which are amazing---especially the first two.

All the 80s albums were remastered in the 90s. None have been remixed which is the only way you're gonna hear dat bass.

You'd think the UK albums would already have been given the 5.1 treatment for the box set had the multitracks been available, but with Jobson you never know...

Elton John--Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
    Joe Walsh--So What

I don't care who does it, just as long as SOMEONE does it.

From what I've heard about the UK Box Set is that the first two albums are in stereo only (on Blu-Ray audio) and that "Night After Night (Live)" received the 5.1 treatment. Jobson might decide to do a 5.1 remix of the first two albums when UK's 40th Anniversary comes up in 2018.

    Forgot to add these albums to my SW 5.1 wish list;

The Mars Volta - "De-loused In The Comatourium", "Frances The Mute", "Amputecture"

It won't happen, but I bet he would make a good remix of Rush's Vapor Trails. The one that exists doesn't have the emotion of the original heavier songs.

Tormato would be really fun to hear in 5.1. All that overplaying/playing over one another that makes the stereo mix sound so cluttered might actually be a virtue in surround.

Saving that up for the expanded version of the box set.
