Frank Fromy - Shub Niggurath - Les Mort Vont Vite
I am glad I am not the only one who appreciates Frank's unique guitar - clearly inspired by Fripp he then developed his own unique sound ( what an amazing fuzzy tone) and approach

Check out the solo on the 2nd part of the song what a tone what a frenzy

guitar tones... if I understand correctly, it's more about sound rather than virtuosity.
    but good playing also..
related to Udi's Gong above, Steve Hillage is one of my favourits ever. I'm pretty surprised he didnt mentioned yet
    for instance, Salmon Song, live.

I heard somebody posting some guitarists who despite very influential on Rock tones they didn't ever did Prog Rock. So it's about time to mention Tony Iommi, whose originality inspired endless generations of guitarists throughout decades.

What about the guitar tones in the four albums Jade Warrior recorded for Islands? I can't check the name of the guitar player now, but the guitar tones are to die for from "Floating World" to "Ways of the sun" (the ones I know and own, anyway).

That’d be Tony Duhig, their guitarist since the very beginning, and a master of excellent guitar tones. This tune, from their first, always mesmerizes me with its searing guitar tone, but there’s some superb guitar tones to be found on all their albums:

Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...

Vedran Božić in Hegedupa upa (an untranslatable word) from Time eponymous s/t debut from 1972.

An interesting detail is that Vedran Božić was played a concert in a night club in the former West Germany with Jimi Hendrix in 1969, because Jimi, who was at his German tour and just went in that club that night, loved how Vedran Božić and his pre-Time band "Roboti" were playing Hey Joe and hence he joined the band on the stage. Then they were played together Foxy Lady and the other songs from Hendrix' catalogue.

When Hillage starts singing, I could swear it's Ted Nugent. Like a prog rock Uncle Ted!
Great stuff though... I miss bands like that that have great live energy.
