What was the deal with Greg Lake chewing gum at the 1974 California Jam show?

I watched the ELP 1974 California Jam video and found it very odd that Greg Lake was chomping on gum whilst singing. Yes, Keith Emerson was chomping on gum also, but he didn't sing.

I've never seen any other videos with gum chewing whilst singing. Was ELP sponsored by Wrigley's or some other gum company?

Did Greg ever chew gum during any other shows?

I think it was paying homage to John Lennon.

I've heard it said chewing gum keeps the mouth moist to offset the effects of snorting cocaine.

I couldn't imagine Greg being under the influence of coke during a show. If that was how mellow he was after doing coke, was he sound asleep otherwise?

I just brought this up because someone commented about the gum on another forum (a bassists' forum).

Nothing to do with prog, but another famous singing gum chewer is Charlie Daniels. He always chews gum when he performs / sings.

I saw a video of Foreigner performing "Cold As Ice" with the original Ian McDonald lineup where Lou Gramm is chewing gum.

Rumor has it the next re-release of Brain Salad Surgery will feature a newly unearthed ELP cover of "Does Your Chewing Gum Loose its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?"

😁 That would be better than the Unknown Ballad on Tarkus.

Chewing gum when trying to remember something, and then chewing the same type of gum when needing to recite it helps. Maybe he just needed a memory booster.

Find a video of Jon Anderson chewing gum and I'll bet we can take that thread to 10 pages

I wouldn't be surprised if Charlie Daniels chewed gum and tobacco together. I've seen a number of major league baseball players do that. I believe Chipper Jones did that for at least several seasons.
