^'In The Air Tonight', maybe! Phil always says he played that to the band. My feeling as to why that may have been turned down is that essentially it's only three chords...not enough for Tony Banks!
With 'Evidence Of Autumn', it's clearly an excellent song but I feel like it's quite close melodically to 'Heathaze' in places. Certainly better than 'Alone Tonight', though.

^It's suggested here that 'Another Record' was around during the Duke sessions. The one on Abacab is very clearly recorded in those sessions, though, it has the same sound as the rest of the album. (It's also not a song I've ever liked...apart from that moody intro, it's terribly dreary.)

^Well, but there is no proof evidence that third track being Another Record (no mention on interviews, no leaked 1980 demo).
I don't even know where the speculations about Another Record being something belonging to the Duke era started from.

Interesting... Another Record was the song that I bought Abacab for mainly. I loved the big open sound with the piano and drums. Phil's drumming on that one is downright tuneful.
Love Inside and Out and Evidence of Autumn and the b-sides from the late 70s (Vancouver, The Day ... etc). Slightly off topic but one of my favourite Hackett tracks is A Life in The Movies which is only on Guitar Speak III - anyone know why it wasn't on a solo album?
Interesting that post the early years, Inside & Out and Paperlate were performed live. Me & Virgil too, I think. Any others?
^I doubt it, that one is terrible.
I don't think so... I've certainly never heard that. Some guy saying it on a forum is hardly a credible source (says the guy saying something on a forum! )
From memory, those are the only ones. And even then, Paperlate and Me And Virgil were only ever played a few times. At least Inside And Out lasted a whole leg of a tour.
...unless you count Phil singing Pigeons on the radio, overtop the backing track!

Does anybody know why one of the three tracks on the STP EP did not get included on the second Archives box??
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.
"Match Of The Day" was not included because the whole band dislike and are embarrassed by the song. I like it a lot, personally.
"Me And Virgil" was also excluded from the set because Phil in particular does not like it. I'm not 100% sure what the other two think of it, but they certainly don't like it enough to have fought for its inclusion.

I can understand for Match, though I don't find it worsen than Pigeon... Either sounded very much ATTWT-ish, but the former would've sat on that album better than WYWM, while not so sure for the latter.
I&O would've fit in W&W, instead of YOSW
Evidence of Autumn is ATTWT Duke-sounding and would've fitted better on either album rather than FYFM, TIOffAgain or Misunderstanding, .
M&V sounds like it could've belonged on Abacrap no problems (or Shapes' flipside, FTM)

^Well it was recorded in the Abacab sessions.
I'm not fond of 'Man On The Corner', 'Like It Or Not' or 'Another Record'. If the original plan was a suite consisting of 'Dodo/Lurker/Naminanu/Submarine', it makes sense as to why those three songs are below par.
I'm not disputing whether it was recording during the Abacab sessions. That doesn't mean it would belong on the album or fit right in with the other songs, because in my opinion it doesn't sound anything like the rest of those songs (even the other ones that were left off the main album).
For me, "Like It Or Not" (I am a fan of Mike Rutherford's writing style) and "Another Record" are not below par either -- there is more going on in either of those songs than "Submarine", which has never done much for me. But I actually like Abacab as it currently exists, although it seems criminal that "You Might Recall" did not make it to the album.
At least it made it out. I would say that is almost an eerily good song by them. I can think of ten songs that are tied for my second favorite after 1978, but none that ties "You Might Recall."
When I first heard it in 1990, I kept hearing the lyrics:
"I know, I know you couldn't carry water"
A new expression for me that I thought meant she couldn't carry her side of the relationship.
But a few years ago I read it was this:
I know And though I know you couldn't care, you oughtta
Ah, the end of a life
Much better! The best part of the song. Well, they are all best parts! I'd like to hear how that was composed.

They had high hopes for Paperlate, releasing it as an A-side single, with a promo video. Funny how the song's life began as Phil singing "Paperlate" into the mic over and over while doing Moonlit Knight at soundcheck!
I'd Rather Be You is one that Tony thought might be released as another A-side single, but that never materialized. It's definitely one of the weaker ones...
Some of the Wilson-era tracks are okay - I particularly like Sign Your Life Away, despite how commercial-sounding it is. The instrumentals are okay...
Well, it was a strong contender for the album, but the times dictated that the more sparse, 'ugly' Whodunnit was the more appropriate choice. Had they done the album in a different era, I suspect You Might Recall would have won that battle.
Tony maintains he didn't play it, Phil swears he did, but I tend to favour Tony's memory over Phil's. Phil tends to mix things up without realizing it... for example, when he has told the story of the Weather Report guys listening to Genesis on their tour bus, he has sometimes said it was Squonk, and other times said it was Follow You Follow Me! He also has a difference of opinion with the rest of the band over what French city was the final Lamb gig.
Phil was one of the dope smokers of the band... Tony was always straight as an arrow. When it comes to memory, I'll listen to Tony.

That's because it's basically 2 different songs. There's the low-key vocals section (which I think is "nice" but kind of drab) and then the more energetic instrumental second part, which seems like it belongs to another song entirely. Maybe it did; I don't know. Both parts sound incomplete on their own, but putting them together isn't really the fix that either of them needed, IMO. I think it's a decent enough song for the EP, but it would not have improved W&W in my eyes, unless it was used to replace both All in a Mouse's Night and Your Own Special Way. Even then, I wouldn't consider it to be one of the better songs on the album.
