Believe it or not, NYC was never known for playing anything outside the grid on commercial radio. Of course there was plenty of Yes, Genesis and ELP played - they were the most commercial prog bands of the time so that fell under the "classic rock" banner. Forget about KC or anything else that didn't fit the bill, though. There were a few indie and college stations that fit that need. WLIR (I think) and WKCR (Columbia), just to name a couple.
Yeah, that's my recollection as well. Scott Muni's "Things From England" hour was about it. Otherwise, Carol King and Elton John 24/7.
THE college station was WFMU. WBAI was required listening as well.
