People may stand up to get a better view. That excuse doesn't work for first row seats, of course.

People in later rows may also stand up to get a better view. They don't realize, or don't care, that "a better view" for them means a worse view for everyone seated behind them. They should be reminded of this.

A spitwad or a blowdart in the neck seems appropriate.

As I said above, you may kill the bloke.

Actually, I have a friend who ALWAYS FRICKIN SINGS when we either see the Musical Box or Hackett Genesis shows. Drives me nutz. I had to call security on him and have him dragged from the show. Unfortunately, the security guard stepped on my foot and was no longer able to stand. I spent the rest of the show looking at the back of some bald guy's head.

Here is an oxymoron for you

    "rock concert etiquette"

Well, not really an oxymoron, but you hopefully get the idea.

But sorry, a Yes concert or a Renaissance concert is not a Broadway play or a Lincoln Center Opera or Ballet. If you expect people to be on their most considerate, best behavior, you will have a bad time. And it seems like a lot of you grumpy old men do have bad times at concerts. Pretty sad if you ask me (which you didn't).

All the YES shows I have been to people sat down, but the band was mostly YES members. Maybe people are standing to look and see if there are any members left.

Pretty F'ing close though. I came to see the band, not you. Your need to have a physically unfettered experience doesn't outweigh my desire to simply see the show.

My wife reminded me that "people are just annoying" or as Satre said "hell is other people at rock concerts."

I think a bit of common sense and courtesy goes a long way. If the majority of people behind you are sitting, then sit the hell down. If you absolutely need to stand, then move somewhere where you won't be blocking people who may not be able to stand for an entire concert. I enjoy standing at rock concerts, but I have enough sense to not ruin a bunch of peoples' nights just to stand up. Plus, sitting is way more comfortable for long concerts, and I'm only 31.

I like to flail around uncontrollably, especially during really quiet instrumentals. If you don't want me doing that in front of you, screw it.

If you want an unfettered view, buy front row seats. Problem solved. Then it will be like the band is playing just for you.

If you expect concert goers to be considerate of you, you will be greatly disappointed. Should everyone be considerate of others?, yeah, but this is a planet earth rock concert. Last I looked, people are just plain inconsiderate slobs. I try not to let those things spoil my enjoyment of the show, and if it gets unbearable, I move.

Not sure what concerts you attend that people do that, but Correct, I'd be screwed. Or I could just move or tell security that you are having an epileptic fit so they will escort you out, just like an umpire did to an annoying fan the other night.

My point is that while you may be (or think you are being) considerate, how do you know that you are not annoying someone else? Maybe you are as tall as a tree and are blocking my petite wife's view, you sometimes inconsiderate slob!

How do you move if there are assigned seats?

But you are agreeing that people who stand at concerts are inconsiderate slobs, so good.

Actually, the inconsiderate slobs are those that are so self centered that they think everyone in a room of a few thousand people should act "considerate."

Are we allowed to cheer at these concerts? Clap? (Not "the clap"). I just want to know what I'm allowed to do or not allowed to do so as to not upset my fellow concert goers.

I'd argue people are just as inconsiderate telling someone else how to enjoy the show. I've never seen a venue have a rule about standing at a rock concert. If someone is concerned about it, they should get a front row or aisle seat with clearer sight lines to the stage. Or just stay home and be grumpy instead of ruining someone else's good time

Saw Yes a few years ago and everyone stood. But it was a general admission show.

However, I read some good reviews of the tour and when I found I could grab a second row center seat for $55 (plus the usual $15 surcharge), I decided to go to the show; I do love me my Drama and Tales.

First set, things were cool. Occasionally a front-row seat holder would get up to lean on the stage, then sit back down. Second set, however, it seems the entire row decided that they would not only like to enjoy Tales from a standing position, but invite friends from the venue to occupy the space their standing left behind them...in front of rest of the audience.

I was not cool with this. I paid for a seat, and frankly, I like to sit at shows. I will stand for an ovation, for an encore or two. I complained. Eventually security cleared the overpacked row and had folks sit down. The guy in front of me decided he'd rather stand. I tapped him on the back and asked he sit down. He mumbled something about "his seat" but sat himself down in a huff.

Really irked me. If you have a front row seat, frelling sit your ass down. There are thousands behind you who may not want to stand.

    Yesholes.
People at a rock show have no reasonable expectation that the other patrons be seated. Most of the time, people stand. It's the way that it is. People with personal quirks like wanting to sit for the entire time should either buy seats in the front row of whatever section they're in, or not go. You had no right to complain.

    1) You may applaud
    2) You may even stand to applaud
    3) You may cheer
    4) You may even stand and cheer
    5) You may applaud and cheer simultaneously
    6) You may even stand while applauding and cheering simultaneously
    7) You may stand, cheer, and applaud for the entirety of the encore
    8) But for the remainder of the performance, sit the fuck down!

Thank you for the clarification. Should we put the above to a vote and put into law?

Although, 1-6 needs a time limitation of some sort. Only applaud when the applaud light goes on? A stand up and sit down sign held up by a roadie? It's starting to get way too complicated.

Relly, you expect people in the front row to sit like they are at the opera? At a Yes concert? Should we all wear tuxedos to these events? If you are physically unable to attend a frickin rock concert, then stay home, buy the DVD (and complain about the sound quality, song selection or god know what else) and quit complaining or better yet, bring your wheelchair and sit in the handicapped spaces provided by most venues (that is not sarcastic, bring a wheelchair and sit down) if your lumbago, back ache or whatever prevents you from standing periodically.

You people sound like you are all ready for the nursing home. I'm sorry if any one of you have physical infirmities that make attending a concert a physical challenge, but, don't ruin the experience for there who go to have a good time.
    This post cracked me up.

I would say that I agree with you except that I think that the manners/etiquette should be based on the rules of the venue and/or the majority of the audience. So, if there are 990 people acting 1 way, those 10 acting another are going to stand out as disruptive.

Or take a guy like Fripp. He sets rules for the crowd...heh.

Yeah, a few can (and usually do) ruin the experience for the majority. But, I sort of expect those 10 people to show up at every concert I go to.

And Fripp - don't get me started on him.

That vote would pass 90/10 for the type of shows we are discussing. But, you know that.

The two worst d-bags are the guy who wants everyone around him to stand up with him and the woman who rushes to the front to dance poorly to odd tempos while holding her hands in the air.

There are a lot of show I see where standing makes perfect sense. Yes, and other older prog acts aren't among them.

    But, you know that also.

After reading countless threads over the years about whatever concert, most of the comments are about what an awful time the person had because other attendees annoyed them. Nothing about the show, the music, the performance. Just complaints about some guy who stood up and said "woohooo" too loud.

Case in point - this thread.

    But whatever.

So, you are saying that a disabled person like me somehow has lost the right to hear live music? Just disgusting.
