I found this pretty odd. The book in my set disappears into the slot and I had to flip the box over and use a putty knife to get it back out. I made a sling out of duct tape to keep the book from disappearing again.

I would say that this is a contender for one of the oddest:

    Bill Evans, Verve box.
It's designed to rust on purpose, and owners have reported getting cuts on their hands.

Yeah, glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. The music is pretty good though -- sort of a French Imogen Heap.

Some band from Mass. that came up with a cool way to promote their stuff around town. Simple is often the best way to go.

I have the somewhat similar one they did for John Coltrane. It doesn't rust, but it's a bitch to get the leatherette book containing the discs out of the metal slipcase.

    Other box sets I own:

One Kiss Leads to Another: Girl Group Sounds - hatbox with "diary" booklet and discs in digipaks designed to look like powder puffs in mirrored compacts.

A Life Less Lived: The Gothic Box - housed in a black leather corset

That Neil Young set was terribly made. I eventually sold my copy because it was like 5 times as big as it needed to be, and the interface for the DVDs seemed like it was designed by morons.

A classic design concept, but incredibly annoying was Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space by Spiritualized, which replicated antibiotics from the pharmacy. There as a blue and white cardboard box, enclosed instructions and the CD itself was housed in a blister pack ... which was a pain once you'd actually opened it

Zoviet France are sort of the first and last word in bizarre packaging for their releases in EVERY format. Weren’t they the ones who sadistically released an album with a sandpaper cover that would ruin the records next to it in the stack?

    Miriodor - 3rd Warning

    ThirdWarning.jpg

Cabezas di Cera - all of their early releases are odd
Hidria Spacefolk - while all 4 square, have interesting configurations.

Right, it was The Return of the Durutti Column (which was their first album)

It was an LP, (not a CD)

And the band Joy Division were the guys who glued the sandpaper to the white LP covers!
