Thread: What well known bands formed 75 and earlier have you seen live?

Seems weird to exclude solo artists on this basis. That would seem to disqualify band membership that didn't occur prior to 1975 as well. For example, the current version of Yes just formed last year. The one before that formed only couple of years earlier, and so on. King Crimson wouldn't qualify at all, unless one saw them prior to 1975.

Doesn't seem weird to me at all. I think you are reading too much into it. A band is a band is a band with a name regardless of who is or isn't in it now or then. It has a very specific start point under a specific name i.e. Status Quo started performing & recording as Status Quo on known given dates, regardless of what they were called before that, or who the members were then or earlier or now.

But you could start your own thread called,"Solo artists you've seen live..." But why I don't want solo artists is because of questions like this: e.g. how do you qualify it date wise? By when they were born perhaps? When they started performing? And that alone is a nightmare to qualify, does that parish centre gig for charity aged 15 count? Or the school dance they played and got payed for aged 17? Or the bands they played in as sessions musicians before going solo? You can see the problem I hope

The thread is about bands formed before 1975 that you've seen AT ANY TIME, not before a certain year. So no problem.

OP said 75 and earlier, Iron Maiden formed 75 & Twisted Sister formed 72. The fact that their debuts came out in 80 & 82 is irrelevant

Yup, that's why I had named Triumph (I used to mow Gil Moore's lawn)

But yeah, I had no idea that IM and TS were so old myself.

Well in the 70's, JW had a stable line-up, just like Rory Gallagher or the Pat Travers Band did

I can understand the desire for specificity, but then the same degree of specificity should be extended to bands as well. As such, King Crimson does not qualify, and Yes only qualifies if seen in the 1970s.

Having been born in 1977, my list is woefully short, but I seem to have a couple that haven't been mentioned yet (Colosseum, Comus, Goblin + the three Finnish ones).

    Accept
    AC/DC
    Black Sabbath
    Colosseum
    Comus
    Deep Purple
    Elonkorjuu
    Goblin
    Iron Maiden
    Judas Priest
    King Crimson
    Kraftwerk
    Magma
    Nits
    Queen
    Procol Harum
    Rush
    Tasavallan Presidentti
    Wigwam
    Uriah Heep
    Yes
    Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Next month I'll add Blue Öyster Cult to the list.

    Kraan
    The Who
    Johnny Winter And
    Ten Years after
    Supersister
    Tassavallan Presidenti
    YES
    King Crimson
    Jethro Tull
Dr. Hook and the medicine show
    Magma
    AC/DC
    Edgar Winter Group
    Mahavishnu Orchestra
    Tony Williams Lifetime
    Secret Oyster
    Alrune Rod
    Burning Red Ivanhoe

    These doesnt count I guess:

    Robin Trower
    John Mayall
    Dr. John
    Zappa
    Fripp

On the other hand most of you mentions artist that are not bands.
In the jazz departement this is almost unavoidable, my list could be much longer - Rypdal, Eberhard Weber, Holdsworth, etc. - And when I mention Mahavishnu or Tony Williams, it wasnt with the original lineup, so...
