Thread: BRAND X Reunite To Tour U.S. Fall 2016/Spring 2017

    Dennard is no slouch though
    - I really have nothing against him. I had just never heard of him. Knew they had other drummers after Phil but only remembered Chuck Burgi (because he was in Rainbow). So just thought it was odd that they were touting him as if he was the guy every Brand X fan would want in the band if they ever got back together.

Goodsall has been doing stuff, since Brand X and Fire Merchants, that is... well, let's just say it's not in the same arena, and leave it at that.
So how is this going to work then? As far as I can tell he's gonna need his chops if he wants to do this stuff properly.

Robin Lumley has been living in Australia for some years, and the impression I get is that he fell out with Jones/Goodsall at some point, maybe going back to the "Is There Anything About ?" debacle.

Interesting...just now I was looking up his tendinitis (sp?) issues and the references cited it occurring in 1978. So was that real or something else (as you state)?
(This reminds me of drummer Andy Ward from Camel; he left the band because of a "hand injury" but years later it was revealed it was alcohol or substance issues.)

Hence, he was out of tune for the entire number. I don't even remember what they played.

But if this does come to Cleveland, I'll most likely be there.

There's also the story of Tangerine Dream cancelling the second leg of their 1977 US tour, supposedly because Chris Franke had been injured in a horseback riding accident, though from what I gather, that time it was because the promoter pulled the plug on the rest of the tour, after everyone lost their shirts in connection with a certain British band who went on tour that summer with an orchestra and a $30,000 Yamaha synthesizer.

Edit: excuse me, make that a $60,000 Yamaha synthesizer (as per Wikipedia).

Fantastic! - saw them during their X-Communication and it was fabulous. Still have my autographed CD from that show. I will go out of my way to see them again if at all possible. I'm hoping Goodsall and Jones are ready to shred. As far as I'm concerned Jones at his best is in the same league as Jacko. - OK, I'm ready to be attacked for that assertion :-)

    Are your kidding me??????

Best news of 2016 !!!!!!!!!!....GOD I hope they come to Atlanta, but I'll HAVE to travel to where-ever they are playing.

Hope Goodsall doesn't hand in a performance like NF 2003 (Tunnels) yikes.
Another ATL dude! Yeah, I'd love to see them at the Variety. I didn't know Tunnels ever played here. I like them too. Goodsalll wasn't into it?

Well they can attack us both, I agree. Jones is amazing. Saw him with tunnels and was completely knocked out, so good!

    I've been on a huge Brand X kick lately, even posted some videos on the Now Playing thread of recent John Goodsall uploads of 1999 Brand X;

I've been fortunate to see several variations of Brand X and Tunnels and other Percy projects over the decades. I so look forward to this group playing in NYC; perhaps the Blue Note, Iridium or BB King's.
Here's possibly my favorite Brand X, ok next to the group that put out the "Unorthodox Behaviour" album; from 1997- Percy Jones, John Goodsall, Pierre Moerlen, Chris Sjobring.

This is the most exciting news since, well, the first Brand X album came out. I saw them twice in 92 or whenever the X Communication tour occurred and then again in about 99. I missed the earlier incarnations on tour. Can't wait until fall!!!!

Wow, exciting news! Saw them back in the day with Phil, and if my memory serves Morris Pert. Sad Phil can't be there and the late Morris Pert, a brilliant percussionist. Saw him with Mike Oldfield too. But ecstatic no less! Hope they're coming to L.A. .

I didn't know this!! Was he there before the "Genesis Ruiner" ?

I remember that performance. It was one of my Emperor Joseph moments when I was saying to myself, "Is this modern?" I do remember that the mallet instrument MIDI controller had to be reset seemingly every 20 seconds because it kept crapping out.

He wasn't the original drummer either...

Not only did Tunnels play here (ATL), my band had the honor of opening for them. (Definite high-point in my musical career)

I seems a long time ago since they opened Knebworth 1978.
I'll keep a look out for UK dates, no doubt the news will break here.

Saw the Bottom Line show with Phil in '77 and will look forward to this with eager anticipation!

The original drummer in Brand X was a guy called John Dillon. With him (and 2nd guitarist Pete Bonas) they recorded an Average White Band style album that was never released. Then the band was re-organised with a pure fusion direction and Collins joined. This happened at a time when Genesis were often on the road promoting "The Lamb", so when Collins wasn't available, Bill Bruford occasionally replaced him for rehearsals. Later when the band played their first gigs Bruford was invited to sit in on percussion alongside Collins, and it was while rehearsing for these than Bruford offered his services to Collins for the "Trick of the Tail" tour.

    Great history again.

What happened to Robin Lumley? We know Morris Pert pasted away a few years ago.

I was in touch with Lumley some years ago (mid-2000s) and he was living in Australia, and had a part-time band which included Graeme Edge (Moody Blues) on drums. I believe he became a music teacher and quit professional music-making.

I was also in touch with Pert doing an e-mail interview that I didn't pursue further than a few initial exchanges because I got too busy with other stuff and the study of Brand X I was working on never got finished. I managed to interview Lumley, Jones, Dennard and Clark extensively, but didn't manage to get in touch with Goodsall, Robinson and Collins (Lumley had offered to pass on questions to him and I never heard back from Collins - not too surprised about that !).

I did amass quite a lot of material, some of which I've shared on forums like this one. If anyone is into writing a history of Brand X I will be happy to share what I have so this is more widely disseminated.

    I saw "Brand X" at Progfest '99.

That Goodsall trio being billed in that manner struck me as a stretch of epic proportion.

    Thankfully, this looks promising!
