Do you mean Queen and Asia aren't/weren't part of the AOR radio format?

Good one! His solo-album Guitarland (featuring Kevin Gilbert) is well worth discovering.

Although in his heart a jazz-rocker I think the work of the late Alan Murphy sounded great in AOR-like music too (John Sloman's solo-album comes to mind.

    And what about Michael Thompson.

Queen and Asia were part of the AOR FM format in the US, along with artists like Bowie and Fleetwood Mac. As someone noted, AOR was not a genre.

I'm not ignoring you. I think that's rude and babyish. I thought the AOR guys might have.

All those Steely Dan guitarists were just ass kickers.

Gary Richrath of REO didn't have tremendous chops but what a gorgeous tone.

Steve Lukather was a freaking beast.

To be honest, I wasn't sure how to spell Lukather, and I was too busy to "google it." But I knew that someone here would mention him.

If the best includes can play any style effortlessly, than easily Tommy Shaw. His bluegrass album went to#2.

Lukather and Schon for sure. I'll throw out some love for...

    Roger Fisher
    Steve DeMarchi
    Brooke St. James
    Bill Leverty
    Marc Diglio
    Warren DeMartini

not to forget the current slew of gunslingers feeding off the AOR/Melodic Rock uprising

and Paul Gilbert can play a little bit (hmmm...Gilbert, the drill and Lisa Wills Adults Only Rock!)

The first couple Ratt albums are really good. I remember liking the intro on a song called Dance, Dance, Dance, where he did one of those rhythmic echo things, ya know, like the intro of One Of These Days, which I always thought sounded cool. And how can you not love a band who has Milton Berle in a couple of their videos (OK, so it was because his nephew was the band's manager, but still, it was pretty cool seeing Uncle Milty, in the Round And Round video).

As I recall, DeMartini participated in that one early 90's Zappa tribute concert, I forget what it was called, but they issued an album of the show, it was like an all star thing where they had all these different people doing Zappa songs (I think including both Dweezil and Keneally). Anyway, Warren played on one song, might have been I Am The Slime on the occasion, as well.

Right, this is why I was asking 2steves if he was saying Queen and Asia weren't part of that radio format.

Yes, that was my way of agreeing with you. It didn't come off too well, but I had your back.

I like some stuff off of the first two Magnum albums, but I never thought Clarkin was much of a soloist.

My pick is Schon & Lukather.
