Thread: And the best Black and White movie ever is:

A couple words about a new to me BW noir film. I found Hidden Fear in the Netflix DVD collection. Excellent pedigree , directed by Andre De Toth , who did a lot of hard edged noir and westerns amoungst others. Starred John Payne , star of the excellent noir , Kansas City Confidential and others as good. Location shot in Denmark in 1957. I never heard of this one and was excited to view it. With the names involved , it couldn't be all bad. Seems theres a reason its not a really known film. Even though the elements for a good film are there , it misses. I think it has to do with the production and filming being done overseas. It plays lie a heavily edited movie. Big jumps in continuity , seems like vital setup bits are missing. Pretty confusing. Pretty bad. A shame really , it has the pieces for a cool flic , just misses the mark though. Really shows the importance of the behind the scenes finishers of Hollywood to the end product. Interesting for a noir fan , disappointing for someone looking to be entertained.
I have run across films from the 40-50s that fly under the radar that turn out to be really good. Theres plenty of flics from the classic era , that for one reason or the other fall through the cracks and are rarly seen. Finding a good one is very satisfying , but even though promising , this wasn't one of those times.

With all the suspects in the room, he'd be the one I'd pick. The man has guilt written all over him.

I'd like to see M again but I don't have cable. I have it on VHS but who watches tapes anymore? I don't.

BTW, there is some amazing stuff going on in this film. When you watch it, bear in mind that it was made 10 years before Citizen Kane.

Ha, my mom still watches her musicals on VHS and she has tons. And a nice setup to boot. Crazy. Been years since I last saw "M". Will be a treat.

Must be. It's certainly old enough. I'm pretty sure the requirement is 75 years. The reason why "It's a Wonderful Life" is in the public domain is because the copyright holder allowed it to expire.

But you would probably get the true B&W experience from your tape.

I found a version on YouTube that's in 720p so I just downloaded that.

Watched A Touch Of Evil for the umpteenth time yesterday, other than Charlton Heston playing a Mexican it's just about perfect. That opening shot is still breathtaking.

How do you download from YT?

First, you need VLC, a free and open source, cross-platform multimedia player. The two best things about VLC are that it's powerful as shit and doesn't have any bullshit ads. It's like the Firefox of media players.

You can find directions online for downloading from YT, but I'll give them to you also; it's very easy once you remember the steps. You may want to C&P them into Word & save for future reference:

    1. Copy the URL of the YT video you want to download
    2. Open VLC and press Ctrl+N. This opens to the network protocol tab of the "Open Media" window
    3. Paste the URL of the video into the space under "Please enter a network URL:"
    4. Press "Enter"
    5. Once the video starts playing in VLC press Ctrl+I or Ctrl+J. It doesn't matter because they both open the same "Current Media Information" window.
    6. At the bottom of the window reads "Location:". In the space next to it is the actual URL of the video.
    7. C&P the actual URL into your browser's address bar. The video should start playing directly in your browser; i.e. you won't be forwarded to another site.
    8. Right-click the video and then click "Save video as". The name defaults to "videoplayback.mp4" so you will probably want to change that. Also, you'll probably need to navigate to your folder of choice on your PC.

This doesn't work with most(?) video sites. I think it worked in Vimeo, or something like, but not in others, like Pornhub or XVideos.

If the video doesn't immediately start playing once you've pasted the URL into your browser's address bar, I have no ideas to suggest. I don't know if it's a default media player thing or a default browser thing. I use Firefox and have VLC as my default media player so if you use Chrome or Safari or something like that, I can't help you if it doesn't work.

VLC might be one of the best vid apps out there. Get it, use it.

Firefox has an app called Video Download Helper. It might also be compelled to work on sites of a more adult nature.

I have used YTD Video Downloader but you have to be careful with it because in the past it wanted to install bloatware on your PC. It had gotten better but be careful. YTD will only allow one video to be downloaded at a time but it will keep other URLs in a queue.

I have downloaded from YouTube for over a decade. Stuff comes and goes, especially vintage concerts. I have collected a number of concerts and music vids. I even have the "cutie dancing to Yes" vid somewhere safe...

I used to have VD but they changed something on it and I wasn't satisfied with it anymore so I haven't added it since my last update of Firefox.

I just remembered another site that VLC works on: iSpot. It's a website that saves videos of TV commercials. Ordinarily, I wouldn't go to this site but there were a couple of commercials that weren't on YouTube anymore and are on iSpot. This is one of them, which may be my favorite commercial, ever:

Watched "M" on Friday night and it was pretty damned cool. Lorre was disturbing, evil and sympathetic all in one. Just watching the emotional roller coaster in his facial expressions as he ranted about his lack of control of his murderous obsessions was like something I've never seen performed so well. Really powerful. I did think the movie got a bit tedious in spots, and the ending was quite abrupt. But, wow, what a film!

I take it you saw the full 109 minute version? The VHS tape I have of it is only 99 minutes. There's been several versions of it over the years, like many of those foreign classics. The Criterion version is the best, most complete.

And, yes, what a film. Lang considered it his best.

It was on TCM, so the full version, of course. I'm glad it's online. Because, like I noted, it ends so abruptly, I actually glanced away during the end and missed part of it. So, I watched the ending online. WHEW!

Of the Lang films I've seen, to me, "Metropolis" is his best. It just blows me away every time I see it.

I think I've gotta side with Lang on this.

Hey, I've been meaning to ask you, have you ever seen any of Jean Renoir's films? I have two of his films on tape, The Rules of the Game and Grand Illusion, which are often considered two of the best films ever made. I've seen the former but not the latter, yet. I'm not sure why I watched The Rules of the Game first, considering the plot, but I really enjoyed it; it was quite funny, which I didn't expect. I suspect Grand Illusion is his magnum opus, tho. I really do need to get off my ass and watch it.

BTW, he was also the son of the famous painter.

To be fair, it's not right to even compare the two.
