I agree Big Big Train would have been a better choice. English Electric Part 1 is a masterpiece. I like well developed musical ideas.
I'm listening to SG as I write this. Yes their OK, but to me not a headliner. If it draws more people to the festival then it is a good thing.
Sunday will be interesting because of the eclectic lineup. Saturday is packed with four excellent bands. And Friday is the Flower Kings need I say more....and don't underestimate Bolus.
So far I have listened to Rain, Crystalline Dreams and now Mystery all pretty good songs from the Room V album. Tomorrow I will listen to Digital Ghosts.
Play nice, Bob.

"Get on Board" Yanks! I think you'd enjoy them. As for headliner status....possibly. Seems to me that "headliner" has a bit of subjectiveness to it (especially when one reads through comments on this thread). At any rate, IMHO, Big Big Train would be a catch for any prog festival.
Big Big Train sounds like its from a kiddie show. As for Flower Kings, I always hated that name, but love the music thankfully. I'm a major trekkie, and always thought Spock's Beard was a great band name. I was a tiny bit disappointed upon buying my first SB disc and there were ZERO Star Trek references! Still think its a great band name, one of the more clever out there. But what do I know, I'm a geek.
Big Big Train has gotten huge raves from the prog community and they would definitely bring a lot of excitement as a headliner, or in any role. Plus, they have an XTC member in the band as well as Nick on drums from Spock's!
But it's been well documented that BBT are NOT open to touring right now. I'm pretty sure George has asked them (perhaps repeatedly), and it sounds like they've been saying 2014, or some time down the road. So, if they stay together and actually get a live show in gear, I'd bet there's a good chance we'll see them at Rosfest next year.

Hey Lazuli did it and so did Magic Pie. Those aren't exactly super well known bands. I can think of at least a dozen(if not more)more well known newer bands.
Big Big Train is a goofy name but so is Spock's Beard and to a lesser extent the Flower Kings and Porcupine Tree(arguably the three biggest prog bands of the past twenty years).

Actually I feel my comment about George was a little off base. Riverside has not been around for twenty years. Quite frankly I'm not sure what his logic is for booking a band but I think it's probably more complex than most of us think and probably a great deal of it has to do with who he feels is going to help boost ticket sales.

I played the first Shadow Gallery song from the ROSfest website and my wife accurately opined "it sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon theme song". I was so wanted to go to this, and was on the fence. I went alone two years ago and took three with me last year. If only they would have have coaxed another PA band into playing; Echolyn would have made it a done deal. Now, I doubt I'll be going.
What a strange comment about Shadow Gallery, I can't even imagine what music of theirs sounds like it's from a cartoon. Let me get this straight, you don't like the lineup but would have gone if Echolyn were there? I can't see ever going to a festival for just one band, nor can I see having one band turn me off from going. Then again, I never go just for headliners, in fact I hope to be surprised by bands I know nothing about. I guess my initial decision to go to Rosfest in 2011, and way back in 99 for Nearfest was based on the lineup. After that, since i had such a great time, I totally trusted the organizers to include a festival full of great music. This year will be my 16th prog festival and 3rd Rosfest, and I have not come away disappointed yet. This year seems to be the most diverse RF yet, and I do hope potential ticket buyers are a bit less finicky and wont let a single song sample sway them from going.
But from their latest album Digital Ghosts, for headphones only:
Well, now we should have no more confusion about Shadow Gallery. No cartoon music to be found! Can't wait to finally see these guys perform! Can't wait till May too, this cold weather sucks...
Maybe no cartoon music but none of those samples get me excited about Shadow Gallery, just not my sort of thing. However I'm sure they'll go down a storm.
