    FLORENCE (WELCH) & THE MACHINE

    1. Until today, I had heard of this band but never had heard a note, and figured if they were that successful how good could they be.

    2. Earlier today I watched parts of the Hangout Festival from Alabama on AXS TV & watched their set.

    3. If 2 women could have a child without male involvement, Florence would be the spawn of Grace Slick & Kate Bush imo, although she expends a hell of a lot more energy than either of them on stage. She flat out both wails her (lovely) ass off when necessary, and wrenches incredible emotion from her ballad singing. I've been under a rock as far as this woman is concerned. Her band ain't bad either.

    4. Not sure I'll be buying their catalogue, but if they play live close enough to me, I'm there!

    5. They're progressive enough for me to put this on the main board. YMMV

    Anybody else "get" this band?

I liked one of their songs, she recently sang it to a sick child.

Yeah...I have their 2nd album ('Ceremonials') and love it quite a bit. She is an exceptional talent, yep.
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

My ex-girlfriend liked Florence + The Machine, and I thought some of their songs were pretty cool (Cosmic Love was one, I think). I bought the first CD as a gift for her, but I haven't really checked out any of Florence Welch's music since then.

The description of Grace Slick meets Kate Bush is quite fascinating though. Perhaps I should check out Ceremonials.

I also bought the first CD, it was pretty good. However, I got completely turned off by watching a live performance on TV (presumably a different one that you watched); she was not capable of keeping pitch - at all.

Please don't compare here to Kate Bush, Kate is in a league of her own :-)

Sent 2 of my 3 daughters to see F+TM on the Phoenix stop of the most recent tour. Excellent seats by the mixing desk, both were gobsmacked by the experience and the fact that Florence came running out into the crowd, stopping right next to them at one point. Tossup for me as to who I like more - Florence or Annie Clark (St Vincent).

Yeh, man I love red heads! I saw a bit of the Hangout with them, they are good. They had sort of a hit earlier this year, I can't remember the title, but that song rocked. Definitely eclectic.

I saw them open for U2 a few years ago. No doubt she has a great voice and great stage presence, but the material does not do a lot for me. She and the band are very talented, but I was not compelled to go out and buy an album.

Great band, I have all three of their albums and enjoy them all. My favourite is probably the latest but there's not much in it.

Wait, is SHE St. Vincent, or that's the name of her band? I tried what I think was her first album, can't quite remember what I thought.

She records using the moniker St. Vincent - not a band per se. Google "St Vincent YouTube Marrow Letterman" Jed - she's friggin' awesome

I think Flo is quite good. “Ship to Wreck” is an ace tune.

I am actually taking my daughter tonight to see her in Tinley Park, IL (awful venue and a schlep), I will provide a post show review.

So I did go last night, made the trek all the way down to Tinley Park and the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater (this years corporate name).

I will start this by stating I wont review this show like most critics review an Adam Sandler movie, meaning a bad review without even watching. (yes I like Adam Sandler movies, they make me laugh)

Florence and the Machine and opening was Of Monsters and Men.

Florence and the Machine is led by Florence Welch a 29 year old from London. She has a strong voice, a lot of energy and definitely stage presence. Behind her was a 9 piece band, including a harp, horns and back up singers. The band is quite talented.

The crowd was mostly 20 somethings (who could certainly learn how to respect others in their space, way too many smokers who lack idea that others are near them, anyways I digress). And the theater was packed, probably around 20,000 in attendance.

Florence does engage the crowd, including running through the crowd and often hugging people. She has a strong but not overpowering voice, I found her to sound a bit like Stevie Nicks, as well as dress like her and dance like her. The songs to me never grabbed my attention and often were deisgned to get the crowd dancing and jumping. But to be fair that is what this crowd wanted. The crowd was loud and enthusiastic.

Walking out my daughter and her friend said they loved the show.

I honestly believe Florence Welch is the love child of Stevie Nicks and David Lee Roth.

The opening band Of Monsters and Men is another 9 piece band from Iceland. I was actually very impressed with this band. Two lead singers male and female and both quite good. The band was very talented and a bit proggy in their presentation. Like FATM, loud booming drums, but two keyboard players and supporting players on various instruments.

Pretty much my same feeling when I saw her open for U2. Didn’t hate it, and I understand the appeal with the younger crowd, but I was not compelled to go out and buy any of her stuff or see her again.

A guy that I work with turned me on to Of Monsters And Men. I don’t have any albums, but have checked out quite a bit of live stuff on youtube and they are indeed an interesting outfit. They are playing about 45 minutes from me this summer. I had thought about checking them out, but the show sold out the day the tickets went on sale, so did not get the chance.

Florence and the Machine give an electrifying performance in Austin City Limits this week, likely to be on at different times on PBS. My friend asked me if they were Prog, and I said that the music was progressive, but not likely to be considered Prog because it's not showy enough with the instrumentation, but the instrument that's showy here is the Florence's voice. Doesn't matter how you characterize this band (4 backup girl singers with 2 of them playing dramatic horn passages, 2 keyboardists, proggy bassist, and appropriate guitarist) I think they are awesome.

The wiki on Florence is real interesting. The fact that her father tilted her towards the Ramones versus Green Day, says a bunch about her father's appreciation for music, IMO. Green Day were posers, just like Nirvana, a punk rock tribute band. She says her largest influence was Grace Slick though. And it shows. Also other influences were Annie Lennox, and early Stevie Nicks

I saw them on Austin City Limits and, eh, I'm glad you all found it exciting. I thought it was all rather monochomatic musically though, like every tune had a similar vibe to it. The Dog Days tune was the most uptempo one in the set and even it was kinda predictable. Sorry to drop by and not be on board, but as I was watching it I was thinking of this thread!

Are comparing to other F and M shows, or just music performances in general. There were some songs I'm surprised they didn't play.

I'm not totally sold on them either. I have their first album which includes Dog Days, but that's the only tune that has really stuck with me. I've seen them twice in festival slots, and enjoyed the vibe in the moment. I can definitely see the Grace Slick vocal influence.

I only am referring to the songs I heard on ACL. Haven't heard the rest. Just found what they played a tad bit turgid, yet low key turgid. And I usually like pompous music <looks around PE>, so I dunno... <shrugs>

She's on the new Lady Gaga album:

I had a video here but they're all instrumental on YT; you can hear the real thing on Spotify.

Love F+TM! Especially What The Water Gave Me and Cosmic Love (and probably a few others but forgot)
