Tommy, Who's Next and Quadrophenia: Rate these albums.

Tommy, Who's Next, and Quadrophenia. How do you rate this classic Who albums?

    I like Who's next best 10
    Quadrophenia. 9
    Tommy. 7

The only reasons Tommy is last on my list would be that it did not age that well IMO. These days sounds a little dated and unfortunately a little corny, But when it was hot it was really hot. It was right for it's time.

Who's Next will never get old. Nothing much to date it, and it's as close to a perfect album as you can get.

And Quadrophenia in the years to come, may not wear well through fads and phases, but it's just too good to ever sound cheesy. A work of art in many ways.

    Who's Next 9.5
    Quadrophenia 8.5
    Tommy 7.5

I'd throw "Live At Leeds" in there at 8.7 to 8.3 depending on the weather.

    Quadrophenia - 10/10 - if the volume control went up to 11 - I'd give it 11.
    Who's Next - 9/10
    Tommy 7/10

Who's Next is the better album, but I prefer Tommy. Quadrophenia never did much for me; just OK.

I revisited these albums recently, and my enjoyment of them was similar. And I love Leeds, Sell Out, and all their early singles.

Tommy and Quadrophenia are both 10s. I got burned out on Who's Next, but it's a great album as well. 9.
Live At Leeds=10. The Who Sell Out=9.5.
Hey, they are all great albums. The Who were and are great! They're playing tonight in the Bay Area. I saw the Quadrophenia tour a few years ago.
Fantastic. I saw them do Tommy in 69 and 70, then caught them in 83, I believe. They're all right.
Lambert and Stamp is a must see IMO.

One of the best 3 album runs in the history of rock n roll for me. Very very tough, but I would rate them:

    1. Quad
    2. Who's Next
    3. Tommy

All 3 are stone cold classics IMO.

Let's just do the whole thing.

Not counting compilations, and leaving out post-Moon live albums...

The Who Sings My Generation: 6/10
    Happy Jack: 5/10
    The Who Sell Out: 7/10
Direct Hits from the Who: 5/10
    Tommy: 7/10
    Live at Leeds: 9/10
    Who's Next: 10/10
    Quadrophenia: 11/10
    The Who By Numbers: 5/10
    Who Are You?: 7/10
    Face Dances: 3/10
    It's Hard: 6/10
    Endless Wire: 4/10

That's the truth, and that's all there is to be said about it.

This pretty much mirrors my rating as well, with the provision that even a mediocre Who album is better than the best efforts of 95% of the rest.

Why type an answer when this says it perfectly?

Who By Numbers deserves better than 5, Sell Out and Tommy at least 9's for their influence as well.

I'd say that's about right. Perhaps a point higher for Tommy. Who's Next is certainly their best album.

Pete Townsend by himself wasn't satisfied with the original album. So Townshend re-writed Tommy for the film music.
To these ears, that original album from 1969 is pretty flat in comparision with exciting and funky the film music, and also some tracks are way better than at original album.

    ...And so on.

I agree. By Numbers is also an album without a weak song. All of The Who albums from the 70s are simply great. Actually, they released not many of them in the golden decade, but those albums are all perfect albums of the 70s Rock.

    An amazing album.

Like them all, but my favourite Who's tracks are mostly on Quadrophenia. Off Tommy, 'Go to The Mirror' and 'Overture' stand out too.

It took me a long time to make peace with the post-Quadrophenia albums. When I was a younger man I was disappointed in their lack of thundering rockers when the real problem was my inability to appreciate the subtle nature of those albums. They're still spotty but if you take all the best tracks you can make a pretty decent playlist.
