Thread: Songs about conspiracies, the 1%... The man.

Songs about conspiracies, the 1%... The man.

Traffics "low spark of high heeled boys" to some, literally means boys in high heeled shoes. To others it makes no sense at all. When they say high heeled, I reckon it to mean well heeled, men in high places. government, banks, secret societies etc. assassination by guns that don't make any noise. Bank usury. This song has some interesting and deeper meanings than what is on the surface, without going into too much detail.

Supertramps "crime of the century" and "bloody well right" are conspiratorial. Pink Floyds "Money" hits on it a bit.

Seems there are a lot of these songs that point the finger at our unseen masters / master.

    Any takers?

Or O.S.I is a good one.

Hate it when the truth unravels
Hate it when we cant get a spin
Hate it when the enemy travels
    Cuz it's awfully Un-American

I think you need to be more specific in your target, i.e. narrow it down somewhat. I say that because since the mid-60s it seems like every second song had a sociopolitical message and directed blame at specific parties and conspiracies. In other words, there are hundred of thousands of songs like the type you are after. Nearly every song on nearly every punk and new wave album from 76 to 78 was of a sociopolitical nature and loaded with culprits and conspiracies.

"Taxman" by the Mops. Of course that was written back when the top tax bracket in Britain was 95% so a lot of pop stars relocated overseas. "Should five percent appear too small, be thankful we don't take it all."

Yes... I know!! LOL... So as the man said, throw the net wide. But try to mention the songs that dig pretty deep!
It does not have to be a political discussion either even though 90% of the music out there leans in that direction.

You could add Roger Hodgson's "Had a Dream (Sleeping with the Enemy)":

Had a dream it was war
And they couldn't tell me what it was for
But it was something they could lie about
Something we could die about, you know
    Anytime, anyplace
When you look that man in the face
Well it is not a face you wanna see
Sleeping with the enemy, you know

Perhaps the ultimate is Tarkus, about a beast that devours culture, religion, iconoclasm, everything. It represents all of the bureaucratic and technocratic absolutism the counterculture feared most.

Kate Bush - Night of the Swallow

Not sure if this counts. According to Wikipedia: "The lyrics concern a smuggler planning his next clandestine journey."

    Meet them over at Dover.
    I'll just pilot the motor,
    Take them over the water,
Like a swallow flying to Malta,

    With a hired plane,
    And no names mentioned.
Tonight's the night of the flight.
    Before you know,
    I'll be over the water
    Like a swallow.

    Two words: Warren Zevon

    Lawyers Guns and Money
    Seminole Bingo
    Mr. Bad Example
    Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner
    The Envoy
    etc.

Here are a few good lines from The Envoy:

Things got hot in El Salvador
CIA got caught and couldn't do no more
    He's got diplomatic immunity
He's got a lethal weapon that nobody sees
Looks like another threat to world peace
    For the envoy
    Send the envoy

Atlantis by Donovan. It's not just a pop song. Or so I've been told by a conspiracy theorist.

Here's another one I love, and while a few people around here know the album, this song is a "hidden gem," IMO. Very melancholy and effective. The lyric always reminded me of Warren Zevon, but the music is very Elton John and Beatles.

Randy Vanwarmer (of Just When I Needed You Most fame!) - "Doesn't Matter Anymore"

I never figured out who put the tablets in my drink
The poison worked so fast I poured the last drop down the sink
I never quite recovered, I'm always half asleep
With one eye always peering out from underneath the sheet
And no one knows I'm here, I covered up my tracks
You can't sneak up behind me, I'm lying on my back

I guess it was an accident a couple years ago
I never can remember, and no one seems to know
They found me in a cold dark room lying on the floor
With paper on the windows and nails in the door
And now they tell me what to do, I never ask what for
Anything that mattered doesn't matter anymore

Just out of curiosity, it seems for me that Rush's Tom Sawyer lyrics do have a conspiratorial vibe; or my metaphorical English comprehension is not good yet hahah

David Bowie & Pat Metheny's "This Is Not America", pretty conspiratorial to me. Bowie lyrics precisely, isn't it?

I had just heard it while zapping through the TV channels and it got me wondering how it couldn't be otherwise since the film for which the soundtrack was made was pretty much conspiratorial too, great film btw.

Prog-metal band, Shadow Gallery, did 2 albums, "Tyranny" and "Room V" that are concepts about the nature of war, and the conspiracy that keeps it going.

They touch on: the military industrial complex, hacking, apocalyptic prediction, greed, etc.
And if there were a god, I think it very unlikely that he would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence - Russell

Theo: The Game of Ouroboros. Pretty much the whole album:

Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...
