I might have already mentioned this one - it's a great track. You have to let it develop...

I love it. But I was told “pick one!” so I went with “Pictures.”

That being said I would not consider "awaken" to be side long since it's 15 minutes and falls just a little too short to be side long imo. Ultimately it depends on how long the track is.
It's a very slippery slope. Bob Dylan's Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands is a bit over 11 minutes and takes up all of the side four of Blonde on Blonde.

I think it's ridiculous not to count Supper's Ready as side long. That's why.

It's the same impulse that leads many Progfans to attempt to shoehorn all sorts of bands into the Progressive Rock genre: "I like it, therefore it must fit."

Not quite but there's something to be said about not being anal about everything.

So thinking that words have a defined meaning, not whatever you want them to mean, is anal?

    'Bout what I'd expect.

Funny, but a few years ago (well, long before PeterG SteveG were here), I thought you were quite anal about your lists thread.... Nice of us to have "un-analized" you, though.

Side long...... Depends on how "side" is defined.

Well, there is Keith Jarrett's The Köln Concert double LP with "Part IIc" which is only 7 minutes long but there's not other track at the side four, so it is a side-long track.
But, the cases as such are rare, like, on other side, e.g. Genesis' Supper's Ready which is NOT a side-long song although it's over 22 minutes long simply because there is also Horizons on the side two; thus, Supper's Ready is an epic song which does not fall into the category of *side-long* songs.

The OP asked a specific question. He did not ask for "prog songs more than 15 minutes," (which, by the way, has been many times before anyway) he said "side-long." Supper's Ready is ineligible, because it's not a side-long. Blame Steve Hackett for that.

As I've had a go already, I'll add one in for Jim Casabalas...

No dude, that's not what I said or what I meant. I'm saying that sometimes you have to be flexible with your definitions especially when it comes to something like this. If something can conceivably fit on an album side I see no reason why we can't call it "side long." According to your strict definition a 30 minute track on a cd(not originally released on vinyl) probably wouldn't count either because it's too long to fit on an original vinyl album side.

What list thread are you referring to? That could have been almost anything.

Ok, so I guess(according to some people anyway)only the live version counts as "side long." So now every time I list SR in a thread like this I have to say(only the Seconds Out version).
