Yeah, there's always some who will nitpick but for all intents and purposes I don't see any reason why we can't call it a sidelong epic. It's even longer than some tracks that do technically take up an entire side by themselves.

I forgot to mention the Atom Heart Mother suite. I like that one a lot too.

If "Supper's Ready" counts as a side-long because of the Seconds Out version, then "In Held Twas In I" counts because of the Live in Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra version.

They both count, not because of the live versions, but because any sensible person would have looked at the respective piece and said "Right! That's a full LP side taken care of".

Another piece like that would be The Dabsong Conshirtoe by Caravan. The very short instrumental that follows it on Cunning Stunts doesn't negate the fact that it's 19 minutes long.

Side long is side long. If you got somethin' else there, it ain't side long, no matter what the ______ boys say.

If it's like 16 minutes long or more, it's side long. Just because the band felt compelled to squeeze something else on that side of the album doesn't negate that.

I agree with GG. If it could conceivably take up an entire side it should be fair game(regardless if it's the only track on the side or not). Everything else is splitting hairs imo. That being said I would not consider "awaken" to be side long since it's 15 minutes and falls just a little too short to be side long imo. Ultimately it depends on how long the track is.

Then he should deduct 3 and call it Karn Evil 6.

Errt! Wrong. Reality is what reality is, and the line has to be drawn somewhere. If words mean anything, side long means it's the only thing on the side.

It is side-long on the US release. They stuck Geoff’s short instrumental track at the end of Side A.

Damn, since I'm not familiar with Birdman (what is that?) I was hoping there somehow was a Genesis side-long epic called Second's Out that I'd somehow missed. That sounds like something I'd have a dream about!
