Of course, it is a masterpiece. ITTP was just an example though. No doubt the jazz world were up in arms about John Zorn's Naked City and Torture Garden is, to my ears at least, a masterpiece.
I'm sure many people felt that hard bop jazz and grindcore denied the other.

I can't see how one genre can deny another. It's all music. Whether it works or not is purely subjective.

I get that you don't like Babymetal and I understand why but as soon as the premise that a style of music isn't 'meant to be' something gets made, it implies that there are rules.
Rules in art are boring and generally lead to boring art.

And yeah, I can think of musical styles that fused genres which make my blood boil but they have every right to be. No one style is sacred, everything can be fucked with. My, and I'm sure your, record collection is filled with albums that married different, often contradictory ideas.

What is death metal 'meant to be' anyway? Scary? Made by guys with tattoos and beards?

    Scary?
As much as it can be. Metal as a form is in my opinion 70% atnosphere and 30% musicanship (that's why I loathe progressive metal, djent, shredding etc).

Made by guys with tattoos and beards?
At it's "golden era" stage (1970-1990), yes. Image played an important part of the sum. Sometimes it counted more than the music (see Kiss, the corpse-painted black hordes f.e.)

    Rules?
In heavy metal -as a merely conservative musical genre- yes. Rules work better to my ears for the music to sit in its "true"/"kvlt" status and not ridiculise itself. Only few extremely gifted musicians revolutionised the form. How many examples of something like "Into the Pandemonium" or Naked City's LPs really stand out?

From your musician's point of view you probably are right on your arguments. From the fanboy's, probably not.

I completely agree on this argument. But I never considered heavy metal to be an art form. It's the pornography of rock'n'roll and it rather stay as such. In my opinion always!

PS. Fine stuff the new Knifeworld. Thanks!

Thanks man, I've enjoyed this discussion. It has made an otherwise boring morning pass rather nicely!

As you probably know, I spent most of my thirties playing in a band that fused the so-called polar opposites of Prog and Punk so I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't champion that kind of behaviour elsewhere.

Fans of the band are probably aware of this, but for those of us who are not, but want to stay informed, apparently much has been afoot in the world of Babymetal the last 2 years...

Curiosity? Attention grabbing headline? It showed up in the YouTube feed due to having watched a few vids back when and nothing else looked interesting? Could be a million reasons.
