    Top 5 Krautrock Albums?

I'll admit to not being versed in krautrock though I listen to modern psych bands that get the 'krautrock' label affixed to them, among other influences. Give me 5 "can't miss" albums... Don't give me 25 because you couldn't decide. Pick 5 and stick with them!

    Can - Future Days
Amon Duul II - Wolf City
Popol Vuh - In den garten Pharoas
    Faust - Faust
    Neu! - Neu! '75
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off

    Faust - The Faust Tapes
    Can - Tago Mago
    Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra
    Neu! - Neu!
    Agitation Free - 2nd.

Note that I have left out anything overt electronic, folky, hard rock, 'symph' etc. The spectrum embraced by these five titles is still exceptionally wide. And, as a cheat, I'll concede that the "other" five titles would be by Amon Düül II, Ash Ra Tempel, Cluster, early Kraftwerk and early Tangerine Dream.

Hmmm, this is pretty gosh-darn difficult. Today's choices (no order):

    Can - Tago Mago
    Can - Future Days
    Faust - The Faust Tapes
Amon Duul II - Phallus Dei (the 20+ minute epic title track is such a twisted and bizarre journey; almost the pinnacle of the 'genre' to my ears)
    Ash Ra Temple - Schwingungen

Its a crime to omit many others that could have easily been listed here, but its the same with any great genre/country (Canterbury, Zeuhl, Italy, France, Cardiacs, FZ, etc). Enjoy the ride man!

I'm looking for la crème de la crème as I won't be investing too much $$$ in this genre. I recognize most of the names in this thread so far but don't recall ever owning anything by any of them.

One other thought: Krautrock IMO is a great genre to make compilations of - you can easily fill up 5 CD's (to start) without even blinking.

Its such a diverse and varied "genre" of music that I don't think there is going to be a definitive top 5 albums, but some albums should pop up more than others. Also, with bands like Can, Faust, Amon Duul, its SO difficult to choose just one or two albums as they each have a bunch that are fantastic. Apples, oranges, strawberries, bananas, limes - it comes down to what is your palate desiring today? I always consider Krautrock the last great unknown frontier in the prog world due to its sheer volume, eclecticism, and hidden details on repeated listens.

Wolf City is the one AD album I don't own that seems to always pop up in lists like these.

Also, is more blatant electronic stuff from Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, etc allowed here?

Thanks for the insight.. I'm compiling a list of bands from this thread and I will see what I can find by said bands, regardless of the album I come across.

Only five is so hard. OK…omitting Tangerine Dream (the first seven are indispensable to me), Klaus Schulze, Harmonia and anything else generally regarded as “electronic”:

Popol Vuh – In den Gärten Pharaos
Redemptive and life-affirming. To quote Julian Cope: “One of the greatest meditational Holy works.” Get this today.
Amon Düül II – Tanz der Lemminge
It’s either “Yeti” or this, a less improvised but equally psychedelic kaleidoscope of sounds. I don’t even mind the German accents, which are usually a big turnoff.
    Neu! – Neu!
Their stripped-down, let’s-ride-one-groove- for-ten-minutes-while-I-play-two-notes-on-the-bass approach remains timeless. Shouldn’t work on paper, but it does.
    Can – Tago Mago
“Future Days”, their most “symphonic” effort, is just as good, although totally different in character. “Tago Mago” is a bewildering jungle that repays each visit.
    Cosmic Jokers – Cosmic Jokers
    Tippy and ethereal.

BTW, as a Kraut may I say that the term Krautrock is fucking stupid. Thank you.
