Nice. i loved Munchen when I was there in '93 (Oktoberfest!). Isn't the Ruhrgebiet fairly close to Alsace? I also love that region.

Sort of…Colmar is about as far away as Berlin (5 hours by car vs 2 ½ hours to Amsterdam). The “Pott” used to be the industrial heart of Krautland up until the 1980s.

Oh man, the Oktoberfest is alcoholocaust. Scares me shitless.

But now back to music sweet music...

I agree that "krautrock" is somewhat derogatory. It's like when I read "Frog Prog" to describe French progressive music....

I’m not offended, more amused. The term encompasses so many bands that have very little in common musically, although a few did share personnel. Just compare Amon Düül’s byzantine “Tanz der Lemminge” to Neu!

I'll be Frank (haha - yeah I know), but I have never gotten a ton of mileage out of Affenstunde and Hosianna Mantra. Maybe somebody could enlighten me a bit on what you see/hear on those records that move you? Could be the circumstances in which I have listened as well - who knows? Thanks and appreciated.

Affenstunde is great, but Hosianna Mantra is the one I really have to speak up for. I'd rank HM with the likes of In a Silent Way, Zeit, No Pussyfooting, Oregon's Distant Hills, all those early ECM releases: deeply moving music that has an inner stillness, calm and calming power, a sweetness that lies outside time. Music for dark rooms and inner and outer quietude. Peace.

Eloy- Floating is considered krautrock? I guess I have some krautrock then! Love that album and Inside!

    +1

Affenstunde was mostly done on a Moog (which I think Klaus Schulze subsequently purchased from Florian)

I have to be in a mood for Affenstunde - the same kind of mood as when I'm playing very early Tangerine Dream or early Ash Ra Tempel. I don't play them often, but sometimes it works right as a kind of psychedelic background music (I think even the more avant-garde early Kraut stuff has roots in psychedelia).

Not sure five will do... sounds too few, IMHO... but most likely with the best inside your deck, you probably won't resist doubling or tripling that amount

This is my kind of idea, but you got to give it a wider scope

I just changed one, but that's one the list on this thread (so far) that I'd second...
but it would still miss a Popol Vuh album (either Affenstunde or Hosiana Mantra), Tangerine Dream's Alpha Centauri and Ash Ra Temple's debut album... One could also add Agitation Free' 2nd as well...

Absofuckinglutely... The French seem to do Krautrock almost better than the German do (Heldon, Pinhas)

Any one of their three albums are amazing (though in is more JR/F)... And if you like those, Annexus Quam's first two are a shoo-in for you as well.

to give North-Am people an idea, that's like growing in the 70's Pittsburg and now living in California (inland, though)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

I wouldn't consider any of these as "krautrock", but more like german prog

    2. Can - Future Days
    3. Faust - So Far
    4. Harmonia - Deluxe

    Top 5 Krautrock Albums?

    Can't claim to be original...

Amon Duul II - Wolf City
    Can - Future Days
Agitation Free - Live '74 - At the Cliffs of the River Rhine
    Guru Guru - Kanguru
    Faust - So Far

Looks like I need to get hold of Electric Silence...

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world.

    Can - Future Days
    Embryo- Rocksession
    Kraan- Live 74
    Kollektiv - Kollektiv
Guru Guru-Guru Guru... May catch some flack for this one, but the recording quality is fantastic and Der Elektrolurch is beyond audio mescaline.
Hard not to include stuff from Cluster, (Grosses Wasser) Ibliss, Exmagma, Thirsty Moon, Contact Trio and several others... what a horrible cheater.

Thanks for the insight guys. Sometimes it takes others opinions to appreciate certain albums. I will certainly give them both another slow country drive.

Checking this one out for the first time. VERY nice indeed! I've heard of it for years but never gave it a spin. Even has mellotron! Yeah, this one is good.

I'm guessing I'll be filling lots of gaps in my collection from this thread.
