I have read that Rebel Rebel was written by Bowie but played by someone else, so that aligns with your story as well.

Getting back to Rebel, Rebel, there's a story I read where Bowie showed the riff to an enthusiastic John McEnroe who, in the words of Bowie, massacared it despite playing it incessantly! If I'm not mistaken, Bowie is credited with guitar on the record.

I hate to use Wiki as a source, but here it is: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebel_Rebel

He credited with MOST of the guitar on the record but not all. Supposedly McEnroe was in the room above Bowie's at a posh hotel and Bowie heard his riff being massacred and went up to show him how to play it right. Claims it's the only person he ever showed it to.

Alan Parker is credited with guitar on 1984. Bowie is credited with guitar on everything else.

He claims he played the RR riff too but was uncredited.
