    Pick the odd one out

In each set, three of the items have something in common that the fourth does not possess. Pick the odd one out (with your reason).

    1. The Shins, Gyroscope, Midnight Oil, The Manic Street Preachers. (It's about song titles.)
    2. Genesis, Heart, The Supremes, Porcupine Tree. (Forget this one, I messed up.)
    3. The Eagles, The Triffids, Joy Division, The Kinks. (It's about personnel.)
4, The Stranglers, Joni Mitchell, Traffic, Graham Parker. (It's about album titles.)
    5. The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, The Rascals, Herman's Hermits. (It's about song titles.)

    Go!

Well, the obvious answer for No. 5 is that The Beatles stopped performing decades ago, whereas the other three are still performing in various guises.

I thought the obvious one was #3 where only Joy Division doesn't have "The" in the band name

This is a bit of a reach but it is a correct fact. The Manic Street Preachers are the only band that come from a country (Wales) where the first official language is not English

Another very obvious and correct fact, but again probably not what you are loking for: The Kinks are the only band in that group not formed in the 70s.

No one has got any of the answers yet. I'm sure there are many technically correct answers for each one, but the answers I have in mind are very specific to their music or their personnel. Nothing to do with band names, nor with place of origin.

I would expect people to get No. 2 fairly quickly; the others might be a little more obscure and I might have to give extra clues.

#2: Heart had two Wilsons, as opposed to one for all the others?

    Oh shit!

I stuffed up No. 2. The answer was supposed to be Genesis. I forgot all about Ray Wilson.

Now I need to double-check that all my other answers are correct.

Herman's Hermits don't have a song with "Birthday" in the title?

    Correct!

Nos 1 & 4 are along much the same lines.

All but the Stranglers have titles with the name of a character (Don Juan, John Barleycorn, Mona Lisa).

Please give an example of an incorrect fact.

    ___________

Who are The Shins and Gyroscope? I wasn't looking for a research project.
We're trying to build a monument to show that we were here
It won't be visible through the air
And there won't be any shade to cool the monument to prove that we were here. - Gene Parsons, 1973

Right idea, but not the answer. It's about one word, which appears in an album title of all those acts except one.

Sometimes you get more than you paid for.

    They are both bands.

Still the Stranglers, then, if the word is spark[s].

"Opus Dei is a secret cult." That is the kind of incorrect "fact" that many websites and bloggers publish as fact and want people to believe as fact.
Opus Dei is an open organisation for all Catholics. Nothing secret about it, and nothing cult-like about it.

"Opus Dei is a secret cult" is an incorrect "fact", (in quotes) not an incorrect fact. It cannot be an incorrect fact, because a fact is factual, i.e. correct.

" 'Opus Dei is a secret cult' is an incorrect fact" is an incorrect "fact".
