That's the cool side of fb, I guess...
Though I suspect that finding long-lost-from-view buddies could still be found in different manners than fb... I suppose that fb made it easier, but that's it
I don't see LinkedIn any less intrusive than other social networks, really... They look into your mailbox and e-mail your contacts about joining up
Exactly... In most cases, there is a reason why you lost these "friends" from view (even if not really meaning to "lose them")...
In the 25 years I've been back in Europe, I've only been back in Canada four times and the last time was in 03. (fuck, that's 13 years ago )
The first time was some 18 months after I left, and contact with friends & buddies was great (almost like if it was only a few weeks I'd seen them).... the second time was four years after my crossing the pond... Most of them were married, some pregnant or already mothers, I'd lost actuality with NHL or NFL players so there was more difficulty for me to following sports conversation, etc...
The third time was in the late 90's and TBH, we had not much to say to each other (except for the satisfaction of "seeing" each other" again .
The last time (in 03), I only warned three people that I'd be around and spent most of my time showing my gf Eastern Canada.
In the meantime, only four different friends (couples) only visited me in Europe on seven different occasion (last time was in 99, if memory serves). By then , I was only snail-mailing to five or six people anyways.... and had stopped almost all of it when I acquired an e-mail address and started living virtually on the web.
So distances do matter as well. Don't get me wrong, here, I still love Canada and thank the country to have made me the guy I am today, but I'm not about to join fb just to get acquainted with people I grew apart from.
But is there something wrong with being an old curmudgeon, though??
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.
<<<Or... you can say FUCK IT to all of that and live your life unperturbed by those who feel compelled to tell you, in excruciating detail, the minutiae of their sad existence; force you to see daily photos of their kids doing the most mundane things, and basically bore you to tears with their work or health problems>>>
You still control you're own experience. It takes a 10th of a second to scroll past an annoying post...or maybe 5 seconds to click "unfollow". You have to control your experience here on PE. You don't read every thread if they don't interest you. If you read yet another whiny post from a look-at-me-woe-is-me attention whore, you move on, right? FB isn't that much different. But hey to each his own. The friends is one thing...and I do understand the annoyance factor, believe me. lol But if you have the right friends and like the right pages...your feed is a treasure trove of art, alternative news, and information catering to your style. Like anything, it is what you make it...but to each his own.
I've been on the fence about FB for a long time now but I think the longer I wait to actually succumb, the less likely I actually will. My girlfriend has a lot of friends and family in Winnipeg and she is not on FB despite their incessant "suggesting" she sign up. What they don't know (or refuse to accept) is that she left Winnipeg to get away from most of them!

hahahahahahaha
Hughes, were you born in Canada, lived there, and then moved to Belgium, or are you a Belgian national who moved to Canada at one point and then moved back to Belgium?

I'm on FB because it is the best place to wish Lino a Happy Birthday and follow along with Klonk's antics.
Duncan's going to make a Horns Emoticon!!!
Happy Birthday, Klonk!
Music isn't about chops, or even about talent - it's about sound and the way that sound communicates to people. Mike Keneally
Thanks guys, but let's not turn this into a thread about me it would take some attention away from Lino.

Happy Birthday Klonk, you're much more attractive than Lino!
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
I'd have preferred NOT knowing. Now I was FORCED to be civil!
