Jacques Thollot ‎-- Watch Devil Go (1975)

    Jacques Thollot - Cinq Hops

From a quick glance and reviews and snippets, its looking like he didn't
write a lot like the first few minutes of "Watch Devil Go" or the above
track. Perhaps a bit of a wasted life from some people's perspective
of him being more of a widely accepted composer by not following the
    two directions I posted above?

This has become something of a joke - there is NO relation between François and Jacques Thollot !

"Cinq Hops" is a classic ! A very original sounding album that comes between composed avant jazz and chamber style "RIO" that have some similarities with GREAVES/ BLEGVAD / HERMANN :Kew Rhone, but done in a very French way.
I think the youtube clip that OP linked is quite representative of the whole album, so if you like that clip, it's well worth to look for (BTW, it looks that most of the album is posted on YT).

His first, "Quand le son devient aigu, jeter la girafe à la mer" is much frantic and difficult. I personally found it interesting, but not the kind of an album that I want to come back too often (though I know it has it's admirers.

"A Winter's Tale" is done in a conventional piano trio format, and probably his closest to straight ahead Jazz. Nice, calm album that would be not out of place on ECM.

"Tenga Nina" and "Configuration" (the later co-led with Sam Rivers) are fine example of modern Euro Avant Jazz.
Very different from "Cinq Hops" but also nice. Have some wild electric guitar playing by Noel Akchote.

Haven't heard "Watch Devil Go", "Résurgence" and "Les films de ma ville".

Glad to see he has his admirers. I knew nothing about him at all when I made the first post.

I own Cinq Hops and really enjoy the blend of electric jazz and the somewhat zeuhl-ish atmosphere it conveys. I have yet to listen other albums by him.

IIRC he left us last year.
