Ah, you beat me. I was just going to mention this one. I think it might be one of the few examples of a US band or artist in this thread.

"Sloop John B," the Beach Boys song, is the name of a ship. That reminds me of another ship-named song, "The Riegel" by Pearls Before Swine. It's a song about a WWII prisoner ship that was sunk with something like 3000 lost.

Looking forward to my day in court.

    Henry Gross - Shannon
    Shannon, is gone I heard
    She's drifting out to sea
She always loved to swim away
A song allegedly about Brian Wilson's dog, The sea is clearly a metaphor for death.

The Decemberists have not yet been mentioned, there is a rich vein of sea songs within their repertoire, these three are all from Picaresque alone:

    The Mariners Revenge Song
    We Both Go Down Together
From My Own True Love (Lost At Sea)

It has a Celtic/New Age tinge. If you like the more creative Celtic/New Age, you'll love it.

    Greetings,

"Ramblin' Sailor" from Advent's second album:

This 18-minute epic was actually constructed with both words and music from an old sea chantey, by the way. Also, the story in "Alison Waits (A Ghost Story)" (originally from our self-titled debut with a higher-quality recording appearing as a bonus track on our second album, Cantus Firmus) is set on the sea--with the entire end section of the piece (last verse included) taking place under water.

    Cheers,

    Alan

Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner

    Angel - Mariner

Grand Funk - Closer to Home

Ad Infinitum - Waterline (and a few others on the album refer to the sea but I'm blanking on the song titles)

Fu Manchu - Sea Hag (despite the title, its about cars like most FM songs)

    Rod Stewart - Sailing

Raven - Run Silent, Run Deep

    Rush - Natural Science

Flower Kings - Rhythm of the Sea
