I don't have words to describe Bill Nelson's playing to me suffice to say that in one of the darkest times of my life I was sent a gift certificate to a record store (because my friend felt if he sent me $10 I'd waste it on something useless like food). I bought Body and Soul by Joe Jackson and a used copy of Modern Music by Bebope Deluxe. I probably wouldn't be here is not for those two albums.

Bill Nelson and Phil Manzanera are the two guitarists that NEVER get enough credit or respect for every aspect of their playing.

Hope this works - it's a you tube clip about Dave Kilminsters pedal rig on Steven Wilson tour, presented by Daniel steinhart ( tin spirits, gig rig) I think it's a Channel called that pedal show. Anyway Daniel ( who is I guess a good judge of these things) states that it's the best rock tone he has ever heard. It's well worth. Look as he goes through some of the sounds he uses on the current tour and there is also a short sound check clip.

Yep, Frank kills. Probably the best guitarist I've ever seen.

For crunch-n-balls type of rhythm playing I love James Hetfield and Wolf Hoffman (the guy in my avatar).

I love the tone Eric Johnson produces on his solo-recordings, but it's great to hear his raw sound on "Perpetuum Mobile" from Mariani.
I believe he was 16 when the album was produced.

It's funny that you mention these two because...
I am a massive fan of the EVH sound.
I was recording with Bob recently and he suggested I use one of his amps 'That really gives you the Eddie Van Halen sound'. I think it was made by Kustom.
    It sounded amazing.

I'm not at all keen on that scooped-mid LA rock sound but on all the Roth era VH albums I've never heard it.
    Eddie's tone is the best.

Couple big names not mentioned yet I believe:

My favorite TYA. Set volume to elevenish.

Live of course these guys brought the tone. Ditto volume setting.

Adam Jones has some awful tasty tone too.
