Same age as David Bowie, and same reason (cancer). I'm saddened. A truly great actor.

Actor Alan Rickman died at age 69 of cancer.

We're trying to build a monument to show that we were here
It won't be visible through the air
And there won't be any shade to cool the monument to prove that we were here. - Gene Parsons, 1973
Yes, I read about it several hours ago here at work.
Sad. He was a 'classical' actor with a much wider repertoire than many film-only-buffs seem to credit him for, and with a rather remarkable screen and stage presence - this in addition to that voice.
He probably had a lot more to give as well, but we'll never get to experience it.

"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM
Along with Christopher Walken, the ultimate "bad guy."
I saw him recently as a romantic lead in "Love Actually" and it just seemed... wrong.
By Grabthar's Hammer, what a shock.
FUCK CANCER.
That is all.
Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.
I saw this earlier and was greatly saddened. He came the same route as Bowie, working class lad realises his talent and creativity via art college. The sort of avenue that is all too often stifled in these days of student loans and high tuition fees.
I loved his roles and presence. What a hateful thing cancer truly is.

Yep, fuck cancer indeed.
What a great career the man had. The theater roles, Hans Gruber, Sheriff of Nothingham, Truly Madly Deeply, Galaxy Quest, the angel in Dogma, the swine in Love Actually, and of course, for a generation of millennials he will always be Professor Severus Snape.
By Grabthar's Hammer....what savings.

I'd forgotten Galaxy Quest. I haven't seen the fellow in much, but he did quite a fine job in that and in Dogma. I wouldn't say "swine" about Love Actually... if anything his character was a sad, understandably flawed human and a refreshingly unromantic one in a rom-com. I feel the need to defend him a little since he was one of the only saving graces in that festering turd of a film (along with Emma Thompson and especially Bill Nighy).
Somewhat more relevant to this board, I believe my first-ever exposure to the man was via Mike Oldfield and Tubular Bells II.
Alan Rickman was the only reason to watch Quigley Down Under.
RIP

I don't know if this will help-probably not-but when Rickman and Bowie were born, life expectancy for an English male was several years less than age 69.
huge bummer, made any film worth watching, i especially liked him in Dogma.
I thought he did an excellent role as the bad guy in Die Hard, among his many roles. It`s a shame to lose such a great talent.
He's great in that, though. When my wife heard this this morning she let out a yell - she had a major crush on him, and it's really him in Love Actually who she liked.
He had a great voice - I'll bet he's recorded some audio books.
BTW, ANOTHER very good, classical actor just died - Brian Bedford. He's not as well known, but did a lot of Shakespeare and such. So I think he makes three, with Bowie and Rickman:

An absolutely brilliant actor and man. RIP Alan
RIP 'Marvin'
Truly gifted actor, erudite, and yet capable of playing down & dirty malevolent as well as anybody. Will be missed for sure. RIP Alan.

He was in a wonderful British comedy that doesn't get much notice, Blow Dry, about a hair styling contest and the interactions of the main contestants. Fun stuff. A shame he's gone.

Looking forward to my day in court.

I only remember him from Diehard and Quigley Down Under.
RIP
But for those under thirty across the world Rickman will always be the potions master of Hogwarts.

Alan Rickman was a big fave in this household, from Die Hard (which we re-watched in his honor) to Galaxy Quest to Harry Potter. He also did a great job as Colonel Brandon in the Emma Thompson/Kate Winslet version of Sense and Sensibility (1995).
RIP indeed.
I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.
