    RIP Paul Bley, jazz pianist

I read that jazz pianist Paul Bley passed away at age 83.Bley played with the giants of modern jazz, starting with Charlie Parker and moving on to Charles Mingus,Ornette Coleman,Jimmy Giuffre and so many others.

Bley was a deeply original player, whose jazz vision was derivative of no one but influential to generations of forward looking(thinking) jazz musicians.

I'm glad to have had the chance to hear Paul Bley live in trio with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian at the Village Vanguard years ago.

    RIP Paul Bley.

One of the greats of his generation. I have a much closer relationship to Carla's music than to his, but he was a significant influence on so many other artists whose work I admire - Charlie Haden, Annette Peacock, Niels-Henning Ø. Pedersen, Finnerud Trio, Satoko Fujii etc. - that I have always held an upmost respect for him and his reputation.

    Oh.... crap.

He was my favorite living jazz musician. I have nearly every album he ever released (and there's a ton). He slowed down a lot over the last 5-6 years, so I guess this shouldn't be too surprising, but I'm still pretty crushed.

Sigh - there goes another from that era. My second-favorite Canadian musician (after Glenn Gould)

Some great ones have departed in recent years. RIP to all these cats, and Sam Rivers too.

I'm with you, Facelift. I have Bley records from the 60s to the present day, from ESP to ECM. I will miss him deeply.
I'm not lazy. I just work so fast I'm always done.

I discovered him in 1970 with The Paul Bley Synthesizer Show and got to interview him three times. A remembrance: http://wp.me/p4ZE0X-5Zp

Yeah, it's been quite an interesting few days with several greats leaving us... a reminder. May Paul rest in peace...
