    Album cover artists

I'm sure someone here will know this, did Joni also draw Ladies of the Canyon, and Court & Spark? Because to my eye they both share that nice minimalist cartoon simplicity that she had on So Far.

I believe a large percentage of joni Mitchell's albums carried cover art done by the lady herself. Some that don't, obviously, are: Blue, For the Roses, Hejira, Chalk Mark In a Rainstorm, Night Ride Home, and Shine, because they are clearly photographs. I think quite possibly all the rest are hand drawn/painted by Joni.

Also from the 70s, and also from that same West Coast group of tokers is Neil Young's simple yet wonderful Zuma cover, which also has that simplistic pen drawing. And again, like Joni's covers, I think it was the album singer who drew it.

And another 1970's West Coast album also springs to mind:

For the Roses included a full-panel painting by Joni inside the double gatefold. The photography for Night Ride Home was also by Joni--my copy is packaged in a little portfolio with a set of prints.

Such a talented, multifaceted and good person he was. Still makes me mad when I think about his coked-up wife killing him.

The Magic Band's The Mascara Snake did the painting for Bluejeans & Moonbeams even though he didn't work with the band after Trout Mask Replica.

Reg Smithies, guitarist from The Chameleons, was responsible for the artwork of that fine group:

Peter Farrelly, lead singer and bassist of Fruupp, did their early album covers as well:

I always liked these, especially the first. I like the combination of the relaxed watercolors and the stripes.

I like the second one most. The thirth one would do nice on a T-shirt. It inspired my logo with a touch of the second one.

The covers of the first two Haikara albums were painted by the band's drummer Markus Heikkerö, who is nowadays better known as a visual artist. And why not.

The work of some of these artists and many other have been gathered in the new book Art Record Covers.
One of the discoveries I made was that Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop-cover was made by one of my favorite Pop-art artists Mark Ryden.

I think Bridget Wishart did part of this:
