Amazing series that.
That was a very entertaining game for a pretty dispassionate observer - I don't much like either team. Leafs played very well for two periods, but their defensive shortcomings eventually caught up with them. I think I heard that Jake Gardiner was a -5. Ughh. Matthews' line didn't generate many chances.
Really looking forward to the Jets/Preds series. Should be a dandy!

Really shitty that the NHL playoffs are set up in a way that two of the top three teams in the east have to play each other in the first round--both the Bruins and Leafs deserved to advance to at least the second round this year, and this series was all the proof that you need of that.

The kid is 20 years old, playing in his second season and first NHL playoff, and he was pitted against an experienced veteran defenseman. The expectations that he take the team on his shoulders were foolish to begin with, and I think judging him based on this series would be extremely premature. Matthews was not the issue for the Leafs. In the end, the Leafs defense is their issue that they'll need to address in order to go deeper in the playoffs. Anderson was outstanding in games five and six that sort of made up for it, but that's not a strategy you can bank on.
I thought it was a good series. I couldn't watch last nights game, just as well as I'd probably have had a heart attack. Honestly, I'd picked the Leafs to win in six, so going to seven games didn't exactly surprise me. But not having paid much attention to the Leafs this year, I was struck by how porous their defense is. In the end, that's what killed them, but the Leafs are still a good team up front. If they can make some defensive improvements this off-season, they'll be a threat next year.
Realistically, you have to favor Tampa in the upcoming series, though the Bruins handled them pretty well during the regular season. My gut tells me Tampa in six, but my gut was wrong with Toronto and the Bruins surprised me. Bruins are sort of playing with house money right now. I don't think anyone expected them to be this good this fast. Beating the Leafs and getting to round two was very satisfying. Anything beyond that is gravy as far as I'm concerned.

I agree...Toronto needs to patch up that D and they will be a contender. Ya think Anderson was good? Just wait to see Vasilevsky. This should be a great series.

These 4 series should be awesome. Some great match-ups here. Can't wait...

Vegas, Nashville, Pitt, and Boston are my picks this round.
Peg City/Nashville and Boston/Tampa are both series I'm very interested in. The other two...not so much...
Yeah, wow, it's fake news. NHL never contacted Marchand about this. Multiple sources reporting this, here's one:

Fake or not, the licking isn't the problem...it's the slew foots and elbows to the head.

Marcahnd is a pest, no doubt about it, and sometimes he crosses the line. Lot's of players do. I've never taken exception to any league discipline handed out to him, and overall I wish he'd keep that kind of stuff in check. But unlike a lot of players who do this stuff, he backs his play up with some great skills and production and doesn't turtle when challenged. On balance I'm glad he's on my team, and I'll bet most would feel the same if he were on their team.
Bill
Oh I know I'd feel that way! Hell, I liked Sean Avery when he was here! However..."sometimes" though? I get he's on your team n all, but he is a dirty player. Matt Cooke dirty. A great player like you say...one of the best in the league no doubt, but as dirty as they come. There are instances every game.
That line with him Bergeron and Pasternak is deadly good by the way.
