LOL! My husband and I were at a Leafs/Sens game a couple of years ago and they guy sitting in front of us was cheering for the Sens. We started chatting between periods and I asked him if he was from Ottawa. He looked at me strangely and said "no, what makes you think that?". I said, "you're cheering for Ottawa", to which he responded, "Oh. I just cheer for whoever is playing against the Leafs".

The Rangers are in 6th position in the league and don't have a playoff spot. Every team in a playoff spot in the Atlantic and Pacific divisions have fewer points than the Rangers who are in a Wild Card spot.

    That must be frustrating.

That sort of thing will happen every year until they abolish divisions. There should be just 2 conferences and the playoffs should be 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, etc.. in each conference. In that context the Rangers would be 4th in the conference and would have home ice in the opening round.

I'm torn as to the advantages vs. disadvantages of having divisions. The negatives are obvious - situations where it might be an easier draw in the first round to come in second than in first - but the reasons for keeping the divisions are to foster the great rivalries like MTL vs. BOS, OTT vs. TOR, NYR vs. NYI, ANA vs. LA, EDM vs. CAL, etc. I still think the best hockey of the year is in the first round of the playoffs.

I hate that, for example, Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa are all in the same division. This limits the possibility of a Canadian team making it to the Finals if they have to knock each other off in the early rounds. Right now we're 1-2-3 in our division so chances are 2 of us will face in the opening round. Not good for hockey in Canada imo...

As an American, I wish Bettman would take this more into consideration when making decisions.

I thought the previous method was just fine...this has nothing to do with divisions IMO. (Although obviously make two 8 team divisions spurred this action)

Don’t know if anyone here is into college hockey, but the NCAA tournament starts tomorrow night. I will be rooting on the Western Michigan University Broncos who have had an amazing turnaround season after totally tanking last year and starting out rather mediocre this year. Former NHL skipper Andy Murray is their coach, and he has done an incredible job with a relatively young team. He was named NCHC coach of the year last week.

As for the NHL......looks like my Red Wings are going to miss the playoffs for the first time in 25 years. It has been one hell of a run for us. It will be interesting to see if anything happens with coach Jeff Blashill (also a former WMU head coach).

Boston loses, Leafs win (against Columbus, no less), and we're one step closer to the playoffs.

If I'm in the East I'd relish the chance to play the Habs who are just stumbling along . I don't see them beating Ottawa, Toronto, Boston, or NYR at this point.

    Indeed.

Here's a nice little summation of the playoff format mess.

More is being made of this than the reality of the situation though. A team can't decide to purposefully lose to then "turn it on again" come playoff time. It just doesn't work. Usually a team with a hot hand going into the playoffs does well, regardless of the opponent. Let's see how it plays out. The NHL wants big market teams to move on, regardless of where they are in the standings. Columbus is a great story but not a ratings grabber that an Original Six team is; or a perennial playoff team like the Pens.

5 of the original six are in east now so that sux too.

There must be a fair way to re-seed after round 1 that combines the remaining 8 teams. That way a Boston / Habs final could possibky happen, or Isles Rangers.

The NHL is leaving revenue on the table by not at least allowing a possibility for these mega regional Cup Finals. Right now, conference finals are better/more attractive than the Cup itself in many instances.

They're trying to model themselves after the NFL, but the NHL is no NFL! A regional playoff would be a bigger draw for the NHL, I agree. If it weren't for the crazy travelling involved I'd love to see them do away with divisions and conferences altogether. I don't care if we don't play Boston 5 times in a season if that meant would could play them in the Finals, for example.

There has to be some halfway point to accomplish this....

So, Sid Crosby almost takes off a guy's finger, and the NHL just nods in approval.

This is why they'll always be the #4 (at best) national sport.

You know what? I hate Crosby as much as anyone, but that was a slash across the hands and it happens like 10 times a game. Cody McCloud wouldn't have even been disciplined.

As usual, your lucky bounce goal win against us is followed by a string of losses and downward spiral
