It's not even end of August yet and I'm gettin' antsy to get goin' with the new season!! Was just down in Montreal and stayed in Brossard so I had to cjeck out the Bell Sports Complex which is the training home of the beloved Habs. Classy
place and HUGE. No Habs to be found though. Insert joke here:_____________________________________________

Even us Rangers fans carry a heavy heart...RIP Al Arbour.
    Legendary coach is an understatement...

2nd winningest coach in league history and coach of one of the greatest dynasties ever??? Al Arbour was awesome, even though I did end up despising just about everything in an Isle jersey after the 82-83 finals.

A new baseball tradition? The Home Run Hat Trick! Toronto fans don't get to see a lot of hat tricks (or goals, for that matter ), so when the Toronto Blue Jays Edwin Encarnacion hit three HRs in one game yesterday, Toronto fans did what any hockey loving city would do. They tossed their hats on the field.

Scroll down to the 2nd video. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-...-run-hat-trick

A Toronto Maple Leafs fan and a Ottawa Senators fan go into a pastry shop.
The Toronto Maple Leafs whisks three cookies into his pocket with lightning speed. The baker doesn't notice.
The Toronto Maple Leafs fan says to the Senators fan, "You see how clever we are? You Senators fans can never beat that!"
The Senators fan says to the Maple Leafs fan, "Watch this, any Senators fan is smarter than you, and I'll prove it to ya."
He says to the baker, "Gimme a cookie, I'll show ya a magic trick!" The baker gives him the cookie, which Senators fan promptly eats.
Then he says to the baker, "Gimme another cookie for me magic trick." The baker is getting suspicious, but he gives it to him. He eats this one too.
Then he says again, "Gimme one more cookie..." The baker is getting angry now, but gives him one anyway. The Senators fan eats this one too.
Now the baker is really mad, and he yells, "OK... And now where is your famous magic trick?"
The Senators fan says.... " Now look in the Toronto Maple Leafs guy's pocket!"

LMAO! Good one. I'll have to share that with some friends. Only it'll be Leafs and Habs...and the roles will be reversed.

That's one man in one sport. How many guys have gone through similar experiences and tried to keep it hidden away? Especially the old school players who may not have had a chance to get the sort of diagnoses he did. It's the dark side of every violent sport.

    Absolutely.

That's why it's so sad, IMO.

I have a friend who has played hockey and lacrosse his entire life, and also used to wrestle. He has been suffering many of those symptoms for the last few years and had to retire early from his job because he could no longer function well enough to work. It has been very difficult for him to find treatment. His wife is a sports sociologist, so she has been able to use some of her connections, but even so his family is very frustrated with the lack of available treatment. She told me that if he had been in a car accident he could see a neuro-specialist tomorrow, but chronic sports injuries are very difficult to get treatment for.

Great article, thanks Scott. It's really incredible what Bryce went through and his determination. I can relate on a MUCH smaller level of course. I've played ice hockey and ball hockey all my life, approximately 2500 games. I am 54 and estimate that I've had probably 2-5 concussions. Of course many years ago when most of them happened, concussions weren't really an issue and weren't diagnosed or even noticed. I do remember a few times where after a collision in a game, I didn't sleep well, or felt sick, or had headaches etc but back then, nobody put two and two together. There are times now(I'm now 54) where I wonder if my occasional outbursts have something to do with this. I also suffer from very depressed moods and this probably has something to do with all of that as well. My father is a champion cyclist and motorcycle rider who is extremely competitive in sports and I think I've inherited that as well and because of that, I have also tended to play through almost all of my injuries, taping my knee, wrist, ribs etc..anything to play the next game. This was in hindsight also very dumb as I can now feel some of those aches. I'm still playing and have played 840 games for my current team so it would be sweet to play 1000 just for one team but even more important to me is that I will have a chance to play with my son who will turn 16 this year, as I play in an open-age division. I'm super excited to actually play WITH him as I have coached and watched him for 8 or 9 years. It's a GREAT game and I will always love it.

Congrats to Bryce on a great career and great comeback.

I hear ya, Birdy. Back then it was just "getting your bell rung" and we moved on. I've had a handful of concussions myself, but in my case, there isn't enough brain to rattle inside my cranium to cause any more damage

Very cool you get to play with your son

Judging by your profile picture Scott, there's definitely been some damage . I actually remember one time colliding with a guy and seeing double for about 5 or 6 seconds! I've finally changed my ways a little and now actually let things heal a bit when I get injured but man, I hate missing games. Playing with Daniel(my son) will definitely be fun. I can't wait to set him up
for a few goals but he's a bit full of himself so he'll definitely need a bit of an ego-check.

Literally! A good check can knock the ego right out of a young kid.

My worst KO was playing football. I actually collided with a teammate while tackling some dude on a kickoff. Apparently I played the next set of downs (as I've seen the tape ) but don't remember a damn thing. What a strange feeling to watch yourself on tape yet be unable to remember doing any of it!
