People probably groan at "I remember where I was when I heard about..." stories, but I think mine is noteworthy because I was staying in a backpackers' hostel just 3 or 4 blocks away from the Dakota. Sometime during the night, somebody bounded up the stairs to the male dorm and yelled "John Lennon's been shot." It barely registerred as most of us were deep in sleep and we probably thought someone was drunk or that it was some kind of joke.
In the morning, of course, it was all over the TV news, and the only thing anyone was talking about.
I was watching Monday Night Football. Howard Cossell made the announcement.
James Taylor has a similar story, he was staying in an apartment very close by and actually heard the shots.

John actually contributed his best ever guitar work to Yoko's track 'Walking On Thin Ice' shortly before his murder. He had so much to give. A contender for the finest rock star there ever was, IMHO- he started out idolising Elvis in Liverpool, and ended up matching him in importance/popularity.
I was watching Monday Night Football, also, when they announced he had been killed.
I quite enjoy the film Imagine. Caught it on opening night in 1988.
We're trying to build a monument to show that we were here
It won't be visible through the air
And there won't be any shade to cool the monument to prove that we were here. - Gene Parsons, 1973
I can't stand to even think about it.
Flipping through TV channels last night, I came upon an apparently recent interview with Mark David Chapman. He was starting to talk about his remorse and my wife changed the channel, saying "I don't want to hear this, do you?" No, I don't.
^There are no depths to which some engines of the media will not plumb.
I don't really agree on Elvis being less important (and I didn't say Elvis was more important, either). He was not just a 'performer', he was an incredibly versatile vocalist. Just glibly saying 'he only did covers', as many a later rock fan will do, plays down his brilliance. He was the catalyst. John himself had many quotes to this effect.
Personally, I think the sun rises and sets on The Beatles and everything stems from their existence and that every song, even if it were recordings of John Lennon's beer belches, is a paramount of genius.

The Beatles invented beer belches.
"Corn Flakes pissed in. You ranted. Mission accomplished. Thread closed."

Can't believe 35 years has passed. I too was watching MNF when Cosell announced it. Sorely missed. I never mention the bastard that killed him by name. He should rot in that cell. John was taken way too early. His music will live on forever.
We all shine on
Phil Collins ruined beer belches.
I was in medical school watching Monday Night Football with a small group of friends. After the announcement was made (I can still hear Cosell's voice) someone turned off the TV & we all drifted to our separate rooms. To use the word devastated is an understatement.
I've got a bike you can ride it if you like
