    Neil Young covered

So many artists have done so many covers of Neil Young songs that I feel the subject deserves a covers thread of its own.

***NO COMEDY SKITS PLEASE*** I love Jimmy Fallon as much as the next man, but we've all seen those by now.

Encompassed in this thread are covers of the songs of:
    Neil Young - purely solo
    Neil Young & Crazy Horse
    Neil Young & various bands
    Crazy Horse
    Stills-Young Band
    Buffalo Springfield
    C,S,N & Y

Some of them have even been hits, for example, Prelude's wonderful version of After the Gold Rush, which was a hit twice in the UK, once in 1974, then again in 82 when they rerecorded it. I bought it on 7" in 82, and it remains my favourite Neil Young cover.
At the other end of the spectrum, however, one of the covers I really dislike is the awful Saint Etienne version of Only Love Can Break Your Heart
And on the subject of huge hit cover versions in the Neil & the Horse sphere, that your average Joe doesn't even know is a cover, is Rod Stewart's I Don't Want to Talk About It, which is a Crazy Horse song.

Anyway here are my top V:

    1. Prelude - After the Gold Rush
    2. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Helpless
    3. Adam Sandler - Like a Hurricane
    4. Black Label Society - Heart of Gold
    5. Nikki Sudden - Captain Kennedy

Yes, I've got that on the 12" vinyl. He also does a John Lennon on that as well, but I can't remember what it is, is it Imagine?

Pixies do a great line in NY covers. They did Winterlong fairly early on, but my personal favourite is I've Been Waiting for You, with Kim Deal singing.

There's recently been a clip released somewhere of Dinosaur Jr. (with assorted special guests) doing Cortez the killer, which is kinda awesome.

I've got a free CD cover mount from something like MOJO or Uncut magazine from a few years ago of people covering NY, the best of which in my opinion were Patty Hearst Shifter doing Mr. Soul and Low/Dirty Three doing Down by the River.

Emmylou Harris' 'Wrecking Ball' from her 1995 album by the same name is excellent, IMO.

OSI - New Mama from the Office Of Strategic Influence bonus disc.

(Trivia: there is song called 'Please Hang Up' by Chroma Key - one of Kevin Moore's other projects - which features the sound of vinyl pops and hisses sampled from a Neil Young record)

The first time I heard of The Sadies was when I came across a video of them covering Don't Spook The Horse.

On the cd version of Mott the Hoople's MC Escher cover debut album, one of the 2 bonus tracks is a cover of Ohio.

Wow, that is an odd choice, never heard a cover of that before.

I like a lot of Neil Young covers. A few I can think of...

Cortez the Killer by The Church from Box of Birds (and also by Gov't Mule on a live album)
Down By The River by The Indigo Girls (yes, that's right, and it's awesome - from their 1200 Curfews live album)
Phish does a nice version of Albuquerque - have it on one of the Live Phish releases.

I have this compilation, though haven't listened to it in ages (like so many other CDs). Now I feel like I should listen to it again.

Nothing to laugh about. Young is one of America's best songwriters and shame on those who think differently.

Btw, I did sound work for CSN&Y in the late seventies and they were some of the biggest egos to ever take the stage. But so was I.

You know there's an interesting story about that that I barely remember. Something like Neil played the song for The Alarm before he recorded it, and The Alarm went on stage for one of their shows and performed it before Neal had recorded it. I believe they gave him credit and all - they just couldn't contain themselves.

Has anyone mentioned Annie Lennox's cover of Castle's Burning? Very nice...

You do mean NORTH America's, right?

One of my great shames is that I've never seen Neil Young live. I have no excuse really, he did that whole row of shows at Carnegie Hall recently. Did he release a recording or a DVD from that? He should have.

I used to have all of Neil's albums on CD, then sold them all off during the great CD purge of the late '90s. Sniff... But he's too damned prolific - there are many later albums I've yet to hear or only heard once - a few I've bought but haven't gotten around to yet. I think I need to illegally download his whole discography. Sometimes, you just have to do that...

    and so it begins...
