    The LP is cheap.

    I can give you that much that there are differences between older recordings / LP's and the present, for better and worse - but there are so many other differences between the 60-70'ties and now, that can account for this. Its a mutiple reasons scenario.
    One important thing is, that prog was popular then, and thus some had loads of money, another thing is that it was felt as a major power in society. Music was believed to be a revolutionary force that could change something (only Zappa stayed cool). The artist thought so - and that gave a different energy to the business and the artist.
    Today is "just" entertainment, and nobody believes that it can change anything, but eventually the listener.

    It was possible during the late 1960s & early 1970s to talk of aspiration, the hope that we could change the world by playing music
