RIP Santana Band conga player Raul Rekow

    https://www.facebook.com/carlossanta...53316643306359

We mourn the loss of my brother, Raul Rekow. He was an integral member of Santana for 34 years and the heart beat of the band. His presence on the stage was one of power, grace, collaboration and joy. He redefined what it means to be a conga player. My heart goes out to his family. Raul, may you soar in heaven in the company of your Mom and Dad.

Sorry to hear this. I have listened to Santana since the late '60s and saw them in concert. Rest in peace, Paul.

RIP. I knew him before he joined Santana. I used to play congas with him and Karl Perazzo in the early/mid 70s.

Any word on what he died of?

No idea. He seemed perfectly healthy so this came as a surprise.

You played with him in his pre-Santana days, dude?! Were you in Sapo? Or another band off the books?

No I just hung out with him at some drum workshops. We weren't buddies but he was a very nice guy. He had a lot of passion for percussion.

Googled it. He died of cancer. Nothing more specific.

This bums me out. I'm a huge fan of Santana and I've seen Raul many, many times with them. He was a tremendous player. I hope he's in a better place. Rest In Power, Raul. Condolences to his friends, family and musical collaborators.

    RIP Raul

    =====================

This might not be the ideal place for this but....

Maybe Carlos should hurry to do that early line-up reunion tour/album before a few more depart for greener pastures.
Do we have any news about this?
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Michael Shrieve has said on Facebook that the album is finished.

Now this could be a personal entry in the ex(c)ited thread... at least prior excitement... remains to be seen after the release

KCSM's Jesse "Chuy" Varela did a nice tribute on his Latin Jazz show this past Sunday. Lots of Santana goodness.

    RIP

I am most of the way through Santana's book "Universal Tone". It's not a bad read and seems to avoid much of the narcissism of some other rock bios (ahem Neil Young, Keith Richards). He credits Shrieve with a lot of the band's success, especially since Caravansarai, and is very appreciative of his rhythm section including Raul.

Decent book although I suspect the ghost writer earned his money.

I was at a show of a localy famous comedian in Münster Germany yesterday.

During the break I had a conversation with the sound guy, who happend to be also the sound guy of Brian Auger's Oblivion Express.

He told me how shocked Alex Ligertwood was about Rauls death.
