This is a suggestion made by Ian MacDonald in "Revolution in the Head". But this doesn't seem to be more than hearsay. And again it would seem very ahead of its time to do a one-man recording of this kind as early as 1965.

He has gone on record as saying pretty much just that, on the Anthology documentary. But there's some great drumming in that period- 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and 'Flying' for instance.

Only the foolish continue to mock Ringo's drumming. Having said that, only recently someone here was dragging out that discredited Bernard Purdie rumour!

It's not technically a rumour, it's a claim made (repeatedly) by Purdie himself. I'm not sure how completely fanciful the basis of his claim is (it has been suggested that he may have been hired to overdub or re-do drums on some obscure early Beatles song, or perhaps he was confusing the Beatles with another session he'd done; in any case the likelihood of him having done any recordings with the other Beatles present is just non-existent).

He was, apparently, hired to do overdubs on the Tony Sheridan tracks, which, BTW, were Pete Best, not Ringo. He was supposed to come out with a book, but it, conveniently, never appeared, AFAIK. It's unfortunate, because he's highly regarded for his playing. Not so much for making an ass of himself, though.

Pretty cool, that rooftop set is flatout awesome. Very talented fellow, not real big on the modern heavy bass drum/snare production - kinda like having Petrucci doing a Hank Marvin tribute.
