    Fill In The Blank...

I was watching a documentary about a music artist the other night and one of the people being interviewed made the following statement (probably not exactly, but this is the gist):

"What Frank Sinatra was to the '40s, what Elvis was to the '50s, what The Beatles were to the '60s, <blank> was to the '70s."

In this case <blank> was the subject of the documentary.

Please, if you happened to have seen the documentary don't post the answer here. I'd just like to see what PE members come up with to fill in that blank. Maybe in a couple of days I (or someone else) can reveal the subject of the doc. No, they were definitely not a "prog" artist, lol.

    What say you?

Hmmm... Zeppelin was by most metrics the biggest music act of the decade and they pretty well embodied the 70s, but I'm going with David Cassidy.

My intuition also says LZ, but your wording in the OP said "a music Artist" not band....so, I'm really at a loss...maybe Bowie.

I would say Led Zeppelin, KISS (for a particular generation), The Eagles or even the Bee Gees.....but judging by the tone of the OP, Its gonna be something out of left-field like America, John Denver, Don McLean, or Glenn Campbell

Some good suggestions here, but for being comparable with Elvis and the Beatles for record sales, fame and universal public awareness, I think the only contenders are Elton John, the Bee Gees and ABBA. Since the OP said "music artist", not "act" or "band", I stand by my answer of Elton.

    Frank Zappa?

Or was he the Duke Ellington or Mozart of rock?

If we were talking about the '80s, he'd probably be the guy. "Off the Wall" came out in '79 and may have been his biggest breakthrough since The Jackson 5, but it missed most of that decade.

Well, I can't see any point in dragging this out too much longer. Especially since klothos mentioned the right answer in post #6....

lol...well, it was just one man's opinion...I can't remember who said it. It may have been his manager or a record company exec.
