How’s the new Gong album people who now own the new Gong album?

I’m just waiting for a domestic retailer to get some copies.

It is quite a wonderful album to be honest, do not hesitate to pick it up, not for one second. I have loved Gong since the 70's and I have to say Kavus and the boys have breathed some celestial fire and some new life into the classic sound. This is every bit a Gong album, and Daevid and Gilli will be smiling down while they tap their toes and sip at their infinti-tea

More trivia - John Greaves played the bass riff from the finale of "Tubular Bells" during the transition from the first to the second half of "Little Red Robin Hood Hit The Road" (the original version of which featured Mike Oldfield on lead guitar). At least, that's what I thought I heard. I almost asked John during our post-gig interview but had other, more pressing questions...

In 1980 I had the import LP of Flying Teapot on Virgin Records. When played on a Technics turntable through a pair of JBL Tower speakers and a Pioneer receiver it sounded decent. It definitely contained a livingroom sound not unlike the one Norman Smith insisted on for the early Beatles recordings. Then I bought it on CD and it just sounded as if someone added reverb ..and it was quite awful. ..

Another Jonny update / clarification ... (I absolutely can't wait for these boxes!).

"There will be Zero overlap between Universal book/box and Big Gong box. My aim is that they absolutely compliment each other - sort of super enhanced 'public' Gong 73-75 - Universal, then a deeper, immersive Gong - the big box - all years from the beginning to, well now. Still mulling over what should be covered in the big box got a great pencilled in list already - but there is so much to look at and hear, for example we have 3 Paragong gigs, or at least hefty sections of 3 Paragong gigs to examine. Anyway no more idle musing and speculation from me I have a Universal book deadline to meet or we ain't getting nuffink out in June."

Spoke to Jonny (of GAS) at Hillage gig in Cambridge UK the other night. The 13 CD Universal set will be released end of September apparently. The much larger “esoteric collection” box will then be released by Snapper in a year or two.

Thanks for the update. After a wait of a couple of years for the Universal set, September seems just around the corner. As for the Esoteric box - 'a year or two' means I am not going to get my hopes up too high.

No comparison there - whereas the GG box was mooted as a possible project, there never were reports of any actual production work being undertaken towards it (unless I missed something), there have been all sort of reports of Steve Hillage and Mike Howlett supervising the project, of what would be in it as far as 5.1 remixes, outtakes, full concert recordings etc. So there's a delay in completing it, but that doesn't make it a "fictional" / hypothetical project.

A version of Flying Teapot recently came out on Charly with the original Virgin cover. The timing on Amazon suggests the same old one again.

I'd say no. The sticker does not say "from the original master tapes". The Gong people want us to wait for the non-Charly box. I hope I live that long...

My main interest is in the remastered RGI trilogy. I can't work out what the latest news is supposed to be on this. Is that the one that might be coming out in September, or is it next spring?

Yes. As far as studio albums, it will also contain 1976's "Shamal". Plus loads of live material, mostly the entire concerts from which 1977's "Live Etc." was compiled.

That I’m afraid I don’t know. Hopefully we’ll get an official word on this soon.
