I'm assuming the band Machine Head was named after the Deep Purple album.

Was Magic Pie named after the Flower Kings song?

Discipline (a prog band that I don't think I've ever heard); I'm assuming they got their name from a King Crimson track (and album title).

No one has yet mentioned Judas Priest? They took their name from the title of a song by Bob Dylan.

    Good call. Monster Magnet disqualified.

How about Camembert? They seem strongly Gong-influenced, so I'd suppose that the name was a deliberate reference.

but in every interview when the question of where the band's name originates from, Wyndorf has never mentioned Zappa, just the toy. It was also a random way of selecting the name: it was one of several names under consideration, so, according to interviews with the band, demos were sent out under different band names and the first offer would decide the name.

Spiral Architect, one off technical/prog metal band named after the song of the same name by Black Sabbath.

Prog metal band, Between the Burred and Me took their name from the lyrics of the song 'Ghost Train' by Counting Crows.

yes. My point was that both the band and the Zappa song were named after the toy.

I wonder if the Flower Kings were named after an old song by the Nice called "Flower King of flies." Does anyone know for sure?

    Darl Couglas.

No I did not make that up. The is someone calling themselves that, doing a kind of house-funk remix of Kung Fu Fighting.

Wiki says Oceansize were named after the Jane's Addiction song Ocean Size

Obviously. There's a 20+ year gap between the Zappa song and the formation of the band, Monster Magnet. You know, I was agreeing with your point in my original comment.

Well, they technically took their name from Roine Stolt's song/album "The Flower King", but I guess the question really is whether Stolt's song was inspired by the Nice track.
