Weird Thing That Happened On The Radio

Anyone heard that recent heavy metal tune that sorta rips off Holy Diver? It has to be somewhat popular as I heard it as bumper music on Mike & Mike on ESPN and they almost never play rock n roll, it's all rap stylings on there.

First time I heard it I thought of Holy Diver, even though this riff just repeats the first line whereas HD changes it up.

So I finally caught this on the the radio today. Still have no clue as to who does it but that doesn't matter. After it was done, they played Holy Diver.

I rarely turn on the radio and when I do, something weird like this happens. I ain't saying I had anything to do with it, it was just weird timing, but I do wonder if the dj was having a goof with us listeners, sort of "Here's the song now, and here's the real thing" but I found that timing a bit odd, to say the least. I was open mouthed in the car doing my best McCauley Culkin impression when it happened.

So, whatever. Just a funny story for you'se guys.

Holy Diver was by Dio on the, surprise, surprise Holy Diver album.

But I also heard the track just a few days ago on a darkwave internet radio station, and the intro and main riff are a total rip off of Holy Diver, if indeed we have heard the same track. I have no idea what it is called though or who it is by. I could check the station playlist though, I might be able to find it.

You might be thinking of the Foo Fighters single "Something From Nothing" off their new album last year. A lot of people think it sounds like Holy Diver. However, that isn't the track I was thinking of. I heard one that was a blatant rip off, whereas the Foo Fighters single is mildly similar in a couple of places, nothing more.

I'm betting on the Foo's, as they are a band that might make it onto Mike & Mike. Like I said, they almost never play rock on there.

Yep, that's it. Never would have thought it was them. PeterG, you are right, it is only mildly similar but that riff is the part used as the bumper music so after hearing it multiple times the Dio reference comes out strong. Now you have me wondering about this other tune that you say is a blatant rip off. Well, not too bad for a guy who's been dead for a few years now. Since there's not enough Dio on the radio, even if it's rip offs, that's a good thing.

I still wonder if that dj was being clever or if it just happened that way.

You're all wrong, Dio borrowed it from Frank Sinatra

^^^ I thought it was Steven Wilson, confusing it with The Holy Drinker.

Even I had that album (on cassette) and I'm probably not thought of as much of a heavy rock fan around here. I liked Vivian Campbell's guitar playing.

Isn't Holy Diver the first song on Side 2 of Spinal Tap's "Intravenus de Milo" album? Dio covered it well but the original is much better (Vivian's amps didnt go to 11)
