I was really thinking that Wakeman or Emerson would be ahead of Tony in that particular queue. Maybe it's just whose schedule allows an appearance at the event. What do you think?

Strange that he has a retrospective album out at the moment!
Coincidence? Just saying,that's all!
Well my vote goes to Tony as a composer/writer for certain. As performers, Wakeman and Emerson are more virtuosos, the latter of whom is also a good composer. One that qualifies both as a great composer and player is, of course, Dave Stewart.
As Gentle Giant said, "no god's a man." And no man's a god. Wakeman and Emerson improvised; Banks didn't... or if he did, you never got to hear it (i.e. I believe some of the compositions were born from improvised jams, but the finished product was always adhered to as a composition). So it's not fair to compare; apples and oranges. They all had a degree of dexterity to be able to play what they played.
True that!
And I totally forgot that Wakeman won it in 2012 so I'll slide Steve Howe in his place.

What sparked this thread off? Has there been some sort of list made somewhere with Tony being declared the winner?
I love Tony Banks' music, but I think terms like "_ _ _ God" belong more in the realm of teen-oriented pop.
This is way better than a prog god. Ladies and gentlemen...

Eddie J is a prog god. (I'm sticking with keys players here.) Yeah, these awards seem to always coincide with a new release. Crazy, eh?
Jan Kuijken.

It's about time a God was chosen on unique chord voicings alone! Forget the Moog-shred! Unique chords are where it's AT!

HA!
Deserves it for his 70' work!
Maybe he'll get the Pop God award for his 80's work if one exists?
Banks is an amazing cat for sure, but I still think he is qualified to occasionally wash Dave Stewart's dirty underwear and socks. Folded and ironed, too.
Maybe someone can start a Dave Stewart thread so we can fill it with posts about Tony Banks.
Genesis is my favorite band, so I have no issues with this selection. Yay Tony!
Now go make another non-classical album!
I read those interviews in the link, and I noticed that when listing the four singers he really enjoyed working with he didn't mention Jack Hues. That's interesting, because out of all the singers that he co-opted, I think Hues was perhaps the best vehicle for his songs, with the possible exception of Fish. I think Strictly Inc. was so successful partly because it's all the one vocalist, but also because Hues carries it off so well.
Welcome to Prog Magazine! In addition to continuing to find new ways to keep writing more stories about the same old people, they also created an awards show (apparently to satisfy those holding decades-long grudges against Rolling Stone, the Village Voice, and the R&RHOF). It's the music-geek equivalent of the Feast of Fools.
As someone who isn't into music awards of any sort and who never had an inferiority complex about whether or not this or that publication gave bad press to or ignored any of my favorites, I find this stuff more than a little bit silly - especially when it really is nothing more than getting the same people together to rotate "awards" to.
