    Sigur Ros Takk...

I've been watching the Netflix SF series "Sense8" and caught the final episode of the first season last night. The music at the end was amazing and I did a web search and found that it was a Sigur Ros song called "Saeglopur" from their Takk... album. I've never listened to them before, but I'm becoming impressed. They're considered "post-rock", whatever that is. But, based on some old posts on Progressive Ears, I guess that folks here consider them prog-like.

Does anyone have recommendations on what albums of theirs I should listen to first?

By the way, "Sense8", besides being a very fascinating series has some really innovative music used in its soundtracks.

    Thanks.

If you apply the search function, you'll get several posts concerning both Sigur Ros (and the likes) and the post-rock phenomenon in general.

For SR specifically, I'd start with ( ), Agætis Byrjun and Takk.

    Oh, I love that tune.

My personal favorite of theirs is "( )" which is dark and brooding like the best winter evening.

For most folks, their entry point into the band (and still the one that most folks would suggest to a newcomer) is Ágætis Byrjun. It was their breakthrough in terms of popular culture (one of the tracks featured prominently in the film Vanilla Sky).

    Happy listening!

Oh...might be worth noting: apparently a deluxe edition of Ágætis Byrjun is due to be released sometime soon...so, if you are a fan of the deluxe editions, might wait just a tad longer before chasing this one down

    Great band!!

So wonderful to hear a band where you can't really trace the influences.

Also wonderful with a band that has influenced a lot of bands but noone sounds quite like them.

And they are really good live too. I've seen them 4 times and they've all been magical experiences.

+1 on that. Saw 'em just twice and they were quite excellent.

Yep...a great DVD, that one. I love some of the footage of them performing in the villages.

Heima DVD is great but I cannot understand why they didn't do a Blu - Ray of it?

I'm a massive fan. They are one of those elite few groups who really create their own sonic world. They don't sound like Yes, but I get that same expansive, blissed out feeling listening to Sigur Ros that I do listening to Topographic or "Awaken". I think their live show is amazing too.

And don't forget to check out Jonsi's solo album Go which is a little more accessible and "Euro pop" sounding, but is very enjoyable.

I like the most recent one a lot, it's got a darker feel, otherwise you can't go wrong with Agaetis, Takk or ().

I vote for () too. Look on YouTube, they have tons of video clips. I saw them live once. What a magical night. Would do anything to relive it.

One of the best live bands you can ever hope to see. Can't wait for them to have a new album and tour again. As a friend of mine says, "They are a drop everything band."

SR has this cool, organic type of following with their beautiful videos, appearance and vibe. Their live shows are extremely well done productions - polished, emotional and powerful. I have most of their output, and have been lucky enough to see them several times, starting from a bar band in Boston !!!! Jonsi's vocal style is an acquired taste -

You have to give credit to any band that develops and uses their own language too . . . that does not happen very often.

The wife has been watching Sense8 and i've seen quite a few episodes and I did say to her during one episode that the music sounded like Sigur Ros, who knew? Takk is my favourite by them.

Ian, have you given Chelsea Wolfe's newest, Abyss? If you like the last Sigur Ros, you might well like her latest. Similar sound, but with a Liz Harris (Grouper) style vocal approach.

Love this band to pieces. The new one is quite good too. I also love Valtari, its quite beautiful. its much more minimal I think than the others but is a perfect soundtrack to a cold and snowy night. Th whole album builds to the amazing "Dauðalogn" then falls gracefully from there. That song itself is worth the price alone. Magic

I have a few of hers, but this last one really took things up a notch for me. She's actually out on tour right now, I'll be seeing her the week after ProgDay here in DC...might be near your neck o' the woods soon too!
