I'll have to listen to FSE again...but right now I am listening to a lot of My Dying Bride, so not right now

No underrating of FSE from me. It's an amazing album, and, to me at least, easily the most consistent of this project's (including SGM) releases.

"The Gift"....Blimey! What a tune! Way better than I remembered. Love the production of this album too - beefy, yet organic and detailed. Beautiful playing and vocals of course.
If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.

I assume people know about idiot flesh right?
I like the FSE better now than I did on its release, although I appreciated it greatly back then as well.
To me it's far more direct and immediate in approach than SGM were; an attempt at creating a form which should sound both impulsive and intricate at the same time - and I think they mostly succeed at that. It's as loud as SGM but stripped-down still, reinforcing the Beefheart-meets-metal but with less theatrical antics, less of the exotics and perhaps even more of the punch. The playing is even more self-assured than with SGM, as I hear it.
"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM
Agreed. Initially I didn't quite think that this was on the level of the SGM albums, but aside from Of Natural History (their masterpiece imo), I think it's as good as the other two studios, albeit just different. I'm too lazy to grab the CD but I assume that Dan Rathbun did the engineering on this album as well? The sound is phenomenal - perfect for this music - it retains the SGM "vibe" sonically but slightly updates that. Opeth - take note of what a properly mixed and mastered metal album should sound like (speaking about the last two). Yeah, yeah, I know it transcends pure metal, but metal is at the heart and soul of this music.
So did I miss any projects that happened after this album with these guys? Nils or Dan?

Well, absolutely right. This is not a progressive project that uses metal as another medium to create a certain effect. Nils understands fully what heavy metal is all about - obey the riff - and metal is the ground upon which all astonishing other things happen.
I believe that a person who is not really familiar with the "language" and tradition of heavy metal music cannot really appreciate this sort of music. Just my opinion.
