Nobody has mentioned Chase in this thread, so here is a good opportunity to bring up that band, especially that I have recently received 4CD-worth collection of live material recorded at their 1973-74 tours, purchased directly from the band's bass player Dartanyan Brown.

If there were an US equivalent of Nucleus, capable to combine in an equally seamless manner some killer rock riffs and tunes with potent jazz jamming/improvisations within intricate arrangements, that would be Chase I think.

From what I have heard of Chase, they were horn rock with bombastic David Clayton Thomas style vocals. Their horn section was four trumpets with no sax or trombone so that is an intriguing twist.
