I am another recent convert into the Bob Drake camp and I can confirm that 'the skull mailbox' belongs in every essential avant prog list.

I admit to being a relative youngster exploring this genre but it's definitely appealing to my impartial tastes in music. I'm truly enjoying the new discoveries. I've recently aquired the ones below and they are getting a lot of spins.

Begnagrad were avant-rock band from Slovenia, ex-Yugoslavia, formed in 1975. These magnificent tracks, which sound fresh even today, are from their s/t album from 1982.

One of the best such albums around, IMO, and arguably one of the very best 'progressive' records released during the 80s at large. Bratko Bibic is a monster musician and apparently quite the showman as well. His work with Nimal was also excellent.

Couldn't agree more! I would add the first Combo FH album is a similar 'one-off' album that doesn't sound like anyone else and came out in the same period when the first eastern european albums were finding their way to the west.
I would add that the CD reissue is much better sound quality than the crackly vinyl original.

I'm glad that you like it. I'd like to mention also Tickmayer Formatio from Novi Sad, ex-Yugoslavia. This is Tickmayer Formatio' second album that is a mix of avant-garde jazz, rock & classical music, released in 1987:

What do you guys think about latest album Yugen - Death By Water? I am not big fan of the band, but their style is definitely distinctive. Death By Water probably is their best effort…

I'd like to recommend an excellent album entitled The Tubular West by Samuel Andreyev from Strasbourg, France

    http://samuelandreyev.bandcamp.com/a...e-tubular-west

    Released January 31, 2013

    Personnel:
    Samuel Andreyev
    Ayako Okubo
    Olivier Maurel
    Léo Maurel
    Chris Swithinbank
    Winnie Huang
    Joshua Hyde
    Andrea Agostini
    Nicolas Dufournet

Samuel Andreyev’s new album The Tubular West is the culmination of eighteen years of “musical adventure”—a description given by Van Dyke Parks to Andreyev’s 2000 recording Swollows, but which could suitably apply to his entire output, from inventive solo song cycles recorded in living rooms and garages, to avant-garde modern classical compositions commissioned and performed by some of Europe’s most acclaimed ensembles. With The Tubular West, Andreyev reasserts his unique pop sensibility without compromising any of the qualities that have established him as one of the world’s most significant young composers. In fact, this distinctive new recording lies at the intersection of the two main paths of his musical career.

My only criticism is parts with vocals….Vocals are not needed I guess….

By the way It looks like old RIO bands reach peak of their arts! For instance I was surprised the last Thinking Plague work Decline And Fall is better than their previous works (IMHO).
