    Music

We talk, write, watch and read about it all the time but there aren't that many artists who have actually devoted songs to it. Yes, there are plenty of songs with lyrics about various genres, about soul and pop and folk and rock and the blues and rock n roll and country etc., but very few sing about music as a whole, as a concept, its effect on people and the human need for music. In fact I can only think of two: John Miles , Music, and Abba, Thank You for the Music.

    Hmmm... how about

Barry Manilow- I Write the Songs
Doobie Bros.- Listen to the Music

    More generically-
    Triumph- Magic Power (maybe)
    King's X- Over My Head
Kiki Dee- I Got The Music In Me
Sonny and Cher- The Beat Goes On (although that's a metaphor; maybe it doesn't count)

Off the top of my head

"Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder --- although its a tribute to Duke Ellington, most of the lyrics are about music itself

I don't think your opening premise is fair, Peter. At some level all music is about music, about celebrating the joy that music can bring. Otherwise why write it?

I think what PeterG means is he is looking for songs whose LYRICS are about music.

I think you will find that in the disco/dance genre there are many songs about the music, though sometimes it's hard to separate the ones that are about the music itself from the ones that are simply saying "Get up and dance".

Donovan - The Hurdy Gurdy Man
    Donovan - The Music Makers
Crispian St Peters - Pied Piper (though the music wasn't the main point of the song)
    Travis - Sing
Hair soundtrack - Good Morning Starshine

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Finishing Jubilee Street (from Push the Sky Away).

Interesting and whimsical little song, referencing what i think is the best song on the album (Jubilee Street) and how he wrote it. It all gets a bit 'meta' but i like it.

Does "Life, Love, & Music" by Sebastian Hardie qualify?

Ah, The Who was probably the band luring at the back of my mind I wouldn't think of!

George Harrison - This Song (a song about itself)
Wings - Silly Love Songs (also a song that describes itself).

"One Note Samba" by I can't recall who. Probably originally sung by Astrud Gilberto.

Well, that's more of a moan about the whole 'My Sweet Lord'/'He's So Fine' business.
