“Remember, if it doesn't say "Cuneiform," it's not prog!” - THE Jed Levin
Any time any one speaks to me about any musical project, the one absolute given is "it will not make big money". [tip of the hat to HK]
"Death to false 'support the scene' prog!"
please add 'imo' wherever you like, to avoid offending those easily offended.
^ Unfortunately I only own MANNA/MIRAGE but its a flippin' monster of an album. I mean truly great - easily one of the best "prog" albums of this country in the 70's. When you're in the mood for the Canterbury vibe and are tired of spinning Hatfield (but that'll never happen), then this is the call. I'm also really digging and appreciating side two of GRAVITY recently and they did such a stellar job on that record. I guess honestly I've been reluctant to grab another Muffins album because M/M is such an amazingly strong album.
Does anyone know a reputable seller who might have The Secret Signals 1 & 2 tapes? I'm hoping these come up on CD as a complete set some day but I like having the tapes - got #3 years and years ago and it's full of great zany and cool stuff.
^ ^ ^
jeez. There were something like 30 or 40 of each of these tapes made and sold. Good luck.
and as far as a release on CD, my professional opinion is that will never, ever happen, unless Dave decides to make CDRs. There's NO sale potential in that.

Until this thread, I never even heard of The Muffins. Thanks to you lot, I took the plunge & bought Chronometers. It really does make for a first class summer listening. Light but not lightweight, they sound effortless & unforced while negotiating some heavy duty twists & turns. Also, this stuff is extremely catchy. If I were a musician, I’d be ripping these guys off left & right! Hard to believe these are “just demos”.
"Dem Glücklichen legt auch der Hahn ein Ei."
^ Thanks, sir! Chronometers has got me hooked already - I'll definitely check out the “main course”.

I remember the four minute "Chronometers" edit from the Recommended Records Sampler and being curious about the rest of the piece.
Well, it's 4 minutes out of 20, and it was edited together out of order from 2 pieces that don't occur together.
So, well worth hearing it as the band intended it.
IIRC, the band submitted Expected Freedom for the RR Sampler, (which later ended up on Open City), because It represented the band as they were at that point, and it was rejected b/c CC really wanted the Wizard Of Oz bit, which he really liked.

Even today when CC totes Muff at the ReR site, he writes something to the effect of "[...] start with Chronometers". And there's a point to that, of course; those 22:59 minutes may be the closest we'd get to hear a creative continuation of the initial spirit from Uncle Meat, with the remaining of the 'meters album representing the closest an American band ever got to 'understanding' the Canterbury vision. Incredible to think that the 'meters recordings weren't considered "worthy", although the band as such DO (IMHO) come across as more integral and dedicated on M/M, with that somewhat more direct and live-sounding approach.
