He was in Weird Al's Smells Like Nirvana video, as well as many movie and TV appearances. I remember him playing a guy in one TV show, I think it might have been the 80's version of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, who is at first falsely accused of murdering one woman, but then after narrowly escaping being lynched, turns out to be a murderer after all.
His son Vince Van Patten, of course, was in Rock N Roll High School.
I know him primarily because of his role in the cat food industry.

Isn't Vince the guy who co-hosts all the WPT (World Poker Tour) tournaments with Mike Sexton?

Along with "Eight Is Enough" Van Patten used to be a very prolific "guest star" on just about every tv show there was back in the 70's and 80's. The guy was every where for a while.
Not really but my cats seem to like his cat food alright, they will be sad when i give them the news.
