Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
PRIMARY PROCREATION HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED...
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world.
Metromania & Visionary are my favourites. Still play both regularly.
The only one to be wary of is the debut which contains lots of fun garage/psych riffage but less in the way of great songs.
Knowing you like Ocean, I think you pretty much can't go wrong within most of Eloy's 70s and 80s output. I think you should avoid - like everyone here does - the debut-album and pretty much everything after 1984 - except "Ocean 2: The Answer", you'll love that one.
In a list:
Eloy (1971) - avoid
Inside (1973) - excellent
Floating (1974) - very good
Power and the Passion (1975) - mediocre, but 'The Bells Of Notre Dame' is a classic
Dawn (1976) - excellent
Ocean (1977) - excellent
Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes (1979) - excellent
Colours (1980) - very good
Planets (1981) - excellent
Time To Turn (1982) - very good
Performance (1983) - very good, often neglected
Metromania (1984) - very good, 'All Life Is One' and 'Follow The Light' are classics
Ra (1988) - avoid
Destination (1992) - avoid
The Tides Return Forever (1994) - mediocre, though it shows promise again
Ocean 2: The Answer (1998) - excellent
Visionary (2009) - good
Reincarnation On Stage (2014) - excellent, the only live-album worth mentioning
Floating, for some heavier, rockier stuff.

For what it's worth here is my opinion. Only heard snippets of the early stuff and it has not made me investigate further. Ocean 2 I could listen to every day.
Eloy, Inside, Floating, P&P, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries no opinion
Colours - mediocre
Planets - avoid
Time To Turn - brilliant
Performance - poor
Metromania - good
Ra - very good
Destination - avoid
The Tides - good
Ocean 2 - brilliant
Visionary - avoid
Just listened to Visionary this morning. I think it's a very good album.
Regards,
Jon
My 5 faves are planets, time to turn, silent cries, power and passion and dawn
Timeless Passages is a nice 2-CD compilation if you can find it for a decent price, on Amazon the prices are positively silly

Mutiny is one of the best tracks of all time imo.
Performance rocks and it is at the top of my list.
I still prefer Live. I'm mostly not that fond of live-albums with several additional musicians. Live is just the group playing. Reincarnation on stage has an extra keyboardplayer, an extra guitarplayer and some female vocals. I rather hear what the group can do without those extra's.
Yes, Live is a must.
I also like Performance and Metromania. They're different than what came before (dare I say Rush influenced?), but they rock.
+1 for Colours, Performance, Inside
Performance has some cool stuff. Metromania is crap though. Horrible drum sound
only "Planets" and "Time To Turn" worked for me. That was long time back tho...
Ra (1988) - avoid
Destination (1992) - avoid
The Tides Return Forever (1994) - mediocre, though it shows promise again
I wouldn't put avoid on any of these, "but" I would get them near last as they suffer from being studio creations that sound less like a band and more like a project by the leader of the band.. rate the three as good!

The age of man on an empty page
And chances are
This will save your soul or break it forever "
